Presumably why the 200 years was put in. I am guessing he might be right at that. It does seem even now that people born in the last 10 years or so have very little concept of what life might have been like during and just post world war 2 or the implications of genocide. Of course that's not surprising and it's not too surprising that folks aren't always cognizent of what happened to those Americans who were inhabiting the US pre colonization.

Having said that, it's not a bad idea to be reminded of these things from time to time, and maybe in doing so spending time trying to educate the younger generations on how things can turn out when political decisions are based on racial or ethnic divisions.

You can "invent" all kinds of lame political statements to to twist the holiday, but that's not what it's about.

...

You can spend the day at the White House as an act of atonement for our sins (past, present, and future) and wallowing in your guilt ( imagined or otherwise).

What part of the country do you live in that Native Americans didn't live in first before they were all killed off?

Sorry for the double-dose of sincerity here, but I think it's nice to take a minute and remember that while we're thankful for what we have here, we should all at least acknowledge the most underserved minority in the country, with the lowest life expectancy, and the price they paid for what we can have now.

Yes, yes, I see the light. And the 4th of July is all about celebrating the killing and murdering British soldiers. And Easter is all about celebrating the murder of Jesus. How silly of me to miss the true meaning of our blood thirsty holidays.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

no. .easter we celebrate Jesus turning into a bunny that can pop chocolate eggs!

and no peejay, noone is saying they wanna change the meaning of thanksgiving.. but also to remember what happened.. and you're talking about different reasons..

4th of july there was a reason, independence, freedom from the crown to become an independent country... but what happen to the NA's, was not freedom or anything, they got killed because of prejudice, and fear of their evilz non-christian way.. savages, etc.. or, wasn't that the reason?

I'm native american and I celebrate thanksgiving much for the same reason I celebrate Christmas...the food.

I will always remember what has happened to my ancestors and what continues to happen to them today. I am not angry, I think anger doesn't change anything. I do however believe in educating people.

I spent a lot of my teenage years being very angry about all of this stuff. All I can do now is tell people about what really happened, the stuff the books and schools don't teach you about, in hopes of people learning more about us, and not be so ignorant.

Happy thanksgiving. :)

Really! As far as I'm concerned Pedroh you can celebrate the murder of Maximilian and his White European soldiers for Cinco de Mayo for all I care. You can celebrate any holiday in any way you want to and assign whatever personal meaning to it has for you.

If American Thanksgiving is all about reveling in murder and mayhem to you, party on. That's not what I see and that's not what I'm celebrating.

This thread was started as a sh*t stirrer and that's what I see going on. I'm just calling this nonsense what it is...pure bullsh*t. I don't let fools ruin a holiday so they can make lame political statements. There are 364 other days in the year for that kind of #######. Rain on somebody elses' parade. ;)

If it gives you ulcers and bouts of unrestrained guilt...go to work that day and/or give your your holiday pay back to your employer or to some wino on the street for all I care. Wallow in your misery.

If it's important to "Never forget" other tragedies and genocides, why not this one?

It's only important for 200 years or so - after that it becomes unimportant.

I don't think the Holocaust is going to be a big deal 150 years from now - the world

will have bigger problems to deal with.

I agree, sort of...it becomes less important or relevant, but nevertheless history is always important.

We went to th Plimoth Plantation this past summer, and they want to be called "Native People" instead of "Native Americans". I don't understand that, because if they're native people, they could be native of anywhere.

Yea I have heard that debate too because America came after us or something. Then there's people who bring up that lame George Carlin "indian" story which I think is silly. I guess it's personal choice. I have friends who want to be called "indian", I have friends who want to be called: "Native american" or "Aboriginal" etc.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
