Moving Advice Needed

Hey everyone!

So Dave and I have been trying to research the best way to get him and his stuff from Vancouver to Boston...

Now he doesn't have a ton... he wants his mattress and boxspring... a dresser... and the rest is pretty much 8-10 big boxes.

How did all you guys make the move... and roughly how much did it cost?

I'm just kind of at a loss as where to start... uhaul? moving companies? ups for shipping?

We are planning on moving by U-Haul. My fiance lives in Kelowna, BC but his stuff is in storage in Winnipeg. We haven't gone through the process yet but we have researched this. There are many do it yourself movers that will not allow their trucks to cross the border. However, U-Haul does. We looked into private moving companies too. For us, U-Haul was the cheapest.

I used U haul. you can get price quotes right on their web site. Only beef I had with uhaul, was that they could not gaurentee me a truck until like 3 days prior to my move, even though I booked it almsot 1.5 months in advance!! Plus not al U haul trucks are able to cross the border, so book wel in advance. being your in Vancouver, you should not have that much of a trouble finding a truck.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I'm from Vancouver and will be moving to TN. My brother suggested renting a UHaul from Blaine, WA, just across the border. I haven't looked into whether there'd be any benefit in doing that, but it might be worth it.

Being that they are on a K1 visa, that would prob not work out!

They will deliver a container to Dave's for him to load and lock, and then they will deliver it to your place for you to unload. You can get a section of a large container, or a smaller 6x8x9 box, I believe. They can do a quick online quote if you know how many linear feet you need.

For me, the quote was just a bit cheaper than a u-haul drop-off rental rate was. Perhaps it will be more for a Vancouver-Boston trip, but it never hurts to call and ask!

We've been checking out a few different options....

Right now it seems shipping everything by UPS is looking cheaper... U-Haul was pretty expensive for the truck itself... not to mention with gas prices right now... wow...
