I think the "Fun Stuff" comment was meant to be ironic rather than "Wey hey!! This sure is some fun stuff this alcoholic business!"

Yeah, that's how I read it. Tongue in cheek.

I don't believe it's possible for an alcoholic to become a social drinker. Not everyone agrees with the AA method (I believe that a requirement is to 'give yourself up' to a higher power, which some of my clients have had a problem with. It doesn't necessarily equate to God, but still) but I think it would be difficult to argue that the program is a failure.

Good Luck - to yourself or whoever needs it at this time.

I know my dad was addicted to drugs & alcohol for a few years. He now attends drug meetings and AA meetings 3-4 times a week as well as having a very good support network and he never puts himself in a situation where he will be around drugs or alcohol. I think it's hard for everyone including the family of addicts.

AA's turn themselves to other addictions... I went to a AA meeting/party, and they dont drink, but hell they smoke, or drink cocacola

They do seem to become addicted to the meetings and the coffee served there. But still, its better than hitting the bottle.

To the OP, if you are dealing with someone who is an alcoholic, you can seek support through Al-Anon, which is an organization for families of alcoholics. It will help you to cope with the situation.

sadly, some folks have addictive personality..my freind, herman, was a drunk by age 14......and had to get on antabuse for 3 years just to control the urges to drink..he now drinks about 10 cups of coffee, but he says, he ahd 3 duis prior, "i am not driving drunk and risking killing a family'..he has been sober for 18 years

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

My friend's husband used to use antabuse, when he drank on that it made him as sick as hell (as it is supposed to do). It worked for a while and then he just stopped taking it and drank himself to death. He died from a ruptured oesophagus caused by excessive drinking and vomiting.

The problem with alcoholics usually is, that they are in denial. They don't realise that they are addicited until they have destroyed everything and everyone around them.

My Dad is an alcoholic and he made childhood hell for me. I haven't spoken to him in over 15 years. I think that the worst bit was not my Dad's alcoholism, but seeing my Mom trying to convince him that he needed help for 14 years instead of just leaving him. Maybe that would have made him realise that he was loosing everything he had.

An alcoholic is an alcoholic forever. AA or not, if they lose control for one moment and have only a sip of alcohol, they are back on their addiction. Same thing with any other type of addiction; hard drugs, cigarettes, gambling, you name it. They can never go back to normal. It's really sad.

I hope you are going to be alright :) Al-Anon is a great organisation, I can definitely recommend them if you need help with dealing with an alcoholic.

All the best

Yup, he was in therapy for many years trying to kick the habit, but he was just one of those who couldn't manage it. He was only 26 when he died as well.

Giving up coffee - don't think I could do that. Not a chance - I've tried switching to tea, but it just isn't the same. I think I could do decaf, but is coffee really that bad for you?

I'm guessing most people at AA meetings were smokers before they started going...

I agree! Neil's mom is an alcoholic. You tell her she needs help and just says f-off...she is so bad that she drinks 3-4 litres of hard cider a day, weighs only about 80lbs, is 54 and looks about 85. she is even on disability because they think she is insane because she lies at her dr appts and really she is just drunk not nuts. it's very sad. neil was happy to move away to get away from her because she is beyond helping. he's scared to visit home now because he is afraid of what she will look like to him after not seeing her for a year. I forgot to add that she doesn't eat. If she eats it's only a few ryvita or a sandwich once a day. she'd rather spend money on booze than food.

VJ addiction is my only vice. Forgetting to eat, even forgetting to get a beer from the fridge sometimes :)
