Not everyone who is here illegally is carrying forged papers. (Overstay a visa like 4 million have, you have a valid passport.)

New Haven has a similar program. It does not grant one the ability to drive, but it serves as legal identification. So it can be used for all city services, to obtain a bank account, a library card, and as a general form of ID. The bank account bit is the most important one as far as the city is concerned. Immigrants and aliens (illegal or otherwise) tend to carry a lot of cash on them, usually because they can't get bank accounts. This increases their desirability as a target, which means there's a lot more armed street crime, which makes it less safe for everyone else. The hope is that the money will go in the bank instead.

It's too early to say whether the program's been a success here, but one interesting thing is the number of students who have jumped at the chance for the ID. International students often have a hell of a time getting ID because they often don't or can't drive here. In other words, it's turned out not to be just the 'illegal ID.' It's just a city ID that is indifferent to national origin.

I'd rather not see illegal aliens in the USA at all and when they do break the law to get here or to overstay, the government at all levels shouldn't give these people anything to legitimize, enable, encourage, and reward their illegality. Period!

I have no problem with government issuing ID to valid visa holders to be valid only for the duration of their visa eligibility. However, no legal status, no government issued ID. Period!

Illegals can stash their illegal loot in a tin can and bury it under a tree for all I care, but it is not up to government to legitimize illegal aliens by doing a damn thing to enable them to easily function illegally in our country.

Give them nothing but a one-way back home.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Am I the only one who sees the irony in having this conversation the day before Thanksgiving?

disclaimer: I haven't read pages 1 and 2 so maybe this has already been pointed out.

Don't you realize all rational thoughts go out the window when the word illegal is thrown into the mix. It could be on Thanksgiving and it wouldn't matter. And anyway, the illegal bashers will just tell you, "it's not the same as when the pilgrims came."

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

I see your profile says "Mexico" *suspicious gaze*

As soon as I saw that, everything you had to say turned into 'blah blah blah blah'.

A. If they have overstayed there are processes to right their status or go home.

B. If they are low skilled workers who have no right or ability to apply for a visa in the first place, they are here illegally, breaking laws, do you *really* think they are going to be forth coming with their real information in order to get an ID so they can drive, get a bank account, or pay taxes - the term is illegal for a reason (I know it seems so amazingly obvious but it is lost on some) - they don't belong here in the first place.

C. Unless their own country is under 100 feet of lava and they survived their journey here on a magical flying carpet, they can return to their country of origin.

----

On the flip side it would be a stroke of genius to go in offering this, get a bunch of locations of illegals, then pack them up in little crates (oh with holes and food and toilets of course, maybe some Dish tv, jacuzzi even?) and send them back from whence they came. But I suppose that would be too harsh for the bleeding hearts. Boo. hoo.

It'll never happen. This country is still mostly good, people like you are the exception.

meh.. that's nothing new.. a lot of notary publics and offices who have immigration attorneys and such here in NC.. have already 'NC ID CARD'.. which are not from DMV.. but they are accepted in a lot of places as a form of ID, to get cellphones and such.. so I don't see the big problem besides being issued by the city.. it's not the first one

lol "people like you" That's rich. You mean people who like me who work two jobs, own my own home, own my own vehicle, pay taxes, raise my children to work hard, respect authority, be decent, honest, young men. People like me who go out of their way to volunteer within my community. People like me who are fed up of people sucking the life out of this country. Yes thank heavens there aren't more people like me around. Maybe things would actually get done in this country.

I mean people like you with fascist instincts. The qualities you describe, while very nice, are shared by many. Your fascist instincts, thankfully, are not.

Every single one I know used their real information. It's not as far fetched as you think. When Javi got his visa all we had to do when he came back was go to the DMV and get his license renewed because it was about to expire and switch his social on some documents because he had previously had an ITIN. Nothing else. No underground network to make the "not real" Javi disappear before the real one could show up. NADA! Illegal doesn't translate to fake documents in every case. Of course, it makes it harder to make them look like bad guys when that's the case.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Oh why by all means, let's just open the borders to all n'er do wells, let's just give everyone a free pass into the country, and maybe we can set it up so Oprah will give everyone a free hybrid vehicle upon entry, and blank checks from the federal government. And then let's mandate that every day at noon we all stop whatever we're doing and give the person next to us a huge hug and say "I'm so happy you're a human" Maybe we can switch the national anthem to the Carebear theme song. Let's all sh*t sunshine and lollipops because that will obviously make the USA a better place!
