Damien still won't let me do things for him...it drive me nuts sometimes. When he got his first job...he called one of his friends in JA to send him money for bus fare

'*********************

BUS fare...this is too damn FUNNY...when my cousin husband come up and started working...he was sending home every thing, but the DAMN kitchen sick...she had to put a stop to that, because his family was eating it up.

Damien STILL won't take anything from me. Sometimes it droves me crazy. We were agruing this morning who was going to pay our car insurance this month. He brought the car...I will at least pay the insurance.

He always say he'll never "Live by no woman". I try to explain that we should always do for each other. That was his mentality even when I used to make three times his salary  .

Not sure if this is too personal or not but what kinds of jobs did your men get when they came to the US? I know Louis would do anything! Maybe not fastfood though cause he wont be around meat! LOL. He is a prgrammer at the TV station in St Lucia so he does have some talents. I really want to find out what he is passionate about. I think working just to live has never given him the time to see if there is something he really loves and is good at. He said he wants to take computer classes when he gets here because he feels in the US everyone needs to know these things.

He will be in total shock with his 1st real paycheck! He gets paid once a month now and its equal to less than $400. He gives alot to his mom as it is now. I am sure we will be sending her money ... but no kitchen sinks! ;-)

How long until they can get a job?

cat

My hubby was able to find a job right away. He works for a huge hotel here in the city. I bout died once when his paycheck was bigger than mine....I thought YESSS, YESSSS. He also works as an auto service tech a Walmart. It's a blessing Cause I'm tired of screamin independent I want ti start dependin you yoooou lol  It's well overdue fi me.

I am lucky enough to have a cousin that owns his own tree/lanscaping business and will let him do clean up work. My Aunt also has a boarding farm for horses and said he can shovel all the horse poop he wants! LOL She came to SLU and met Louis and likes him so much she will do just about anything for us.

Who knows maybe he will end up loving something he has never thought of doing before.

He does have dreadlocks, very nice and neat ones I might add, and is worried about them hindering him. Fortunelty there is a big arts community here and crazy hair, tattoos and peircings are the norm. I won't let him cut the dreds!!

I will continue to think positive.

He has a nice smile.

Damien stayed home for six months while we waited to get married, file for the AOS and to get his EAD. He got his EAD card in a Friday and started working the following Monday. He started looking for jobs two weeks before he got his EAD. His first job was working in a freezer of a restuarant warehouse...he stayed there 1 1/2 years. Now he's working for Nestle at a Deer Park plant as a production technician for the last year. He's making good money, great hours and benefits.

Well my husband is still in Jamaica but he has some pretty marketable skills from jobs he's held in JA, so I would think he'd be able to find a job here in CA easily. I live in Los Angeles and there are many immigrants, legal and illegal working right along side everyone else pretty easily. I think he could start making around $12-$15 an hour doing something from his experience. Its all about your resume and presentation. He is getting his skill sets up NOW while he's still in JA so that he is even more marketable when he gets here. He will be able to work right away cause he's coming over on an immigrant visa. We decided 3 months before he gets here we'll start sending resumes out to companies. He'll also look into transferrring from the company he is with there to one here. He wants to go to school for Graphic Design which is HOT HOT HOT right now and they make great money cause there aren't many in it yet the demand is high. I would tell your guy to make his plan of what he wants to do now. Start researching the same way you would if you were gonna up and move to another country. You would look to see how to market yourself with a skill that the country needs or you would adapt and learn a skill that would come in handy in that country. he should do the same before coming here.

Evan tells me he would like to be able to send money back home too, and i don't have a problem with it, if it is budgeted correctly and is used for good reasons. He's not one to ask for money either. Sometimes I feel bad like "man , I really need to give this guy some money, or use my own money", but he won't ask for money when i'm here, and when i'm there, he actually puts money in my pocket and pays for most things. i mean he's not lacing me with a roll of $20's but at least a $20 JA equivalent, haha. He does have more of that traditional mentality that may get us in trouble later. He likes a woman to cook and clean and be all attentive to her man, which I can do but....i work full time in a CAREER, not a job, went to college, make a decent living and still keep my home. i just hope that he doesnt get to upset when i am not always that "woman" he expects me to be.

I have issues with this bc my hubby's the same way. I do the best I can being the "woman", cooking and cleaning working a fulltime and a parttime job and going to school :help: I He wants me to be that attentive wife but's It hard not be distracted. He may never say anything but I can tell by his body language. I don't mind being that person, It's just hard to find balance sometimes. He'll be telling me about something at work and my mind is else wear on school projects or on the patient that eloped from the hospital  We work various hours and sometimes I'm out like a light when he's up and ready to go.

Yeah Brown, I'm the same way. And i guess its even worse for Evan cause we are so far apart and I think he just gets lonely and sad, and then it turns into him being upset about me not giving him enough affection. I try to do what I can, but its such a new thing..this whole LDR so I am learning how to show him I care and show affection from so far away. I think i also know how to pace myself in this whole visa process more than he does. I know its gonna be a long wait and he's just kinda outta of the loop...not having VJ and all, so he just sits and waits and waits and waits.
