??? Ladies,

I'm looking for help for a friend, their both jamaican, but he's only been here for around 4 years. problem is his buying habits for his kids in J.a.

background: their married and she's 7 months pregnant

i.e. he and the baby mother in j.a. bought a pair of clarks for his daughter. my friend thinks, his kids should get payless or cheaper shoes because the ground/road in j.a. is hard and the shoes aren't going to last long. he then caught her looking at a pair of baby Gucci sneakers and things went downhill from there. I told her to be careful of how she says things because she doesn't want it to look like she only wants him to buy cheap things for his children.

I told her that if he and the baby mother want to buy clarks for the girl (pre-teen) then that is their business. It is up to her to steer him to a more affordable way. i.e. buying them when they are on sale. he says he wants to do for his kids because he's not there and yada yada yada.

any advice??? same experiences??

Girl I know what u mean...His wife should NEVER make him feel that HIS other kids are not important enough to buy expensive stuff for...If he can STILL contribute to his life here and buy all that stuff for his kids why not ? I often think it's the fact that "they r not my kids" makes things so difficult and also "u had them with someone else" It's tough b/c my husband have kids we have to support as well but I never show resent or anything like that..Has she ever met the kids in JA ? if not maybe it's a good time to try..and even to talk with the kids mom cause now I am apart of their lives if u like it or not..and maybe one day these kids will end up at my house and I NEED to know that they will be taken care of and not pushed to the side b/c they are the "other" kids

No she's never met them, she just doesn't think they need brand name things, because she says they aren't going anywhere, she's from j.a. they do need the money up here, which is why i'm suggesting letting him buy on sale. she doesn't resent them, just thinks that their kids and they will wear their stuff hard, i.e. the little girl now needs a new pair of clarks because she has worn them out.

I don't even think this is a J.a. issue but an issue where there are step-children involved.

No didn't think it was JA issue either just used that cause they r in JA

If she buys payless they will need shoes and clothes more often..she has to remember that in JA people have to walk..to get on the bus get stepped on..walk from to bus school in the rain...Yes i agree they can buy on sale or in dept stores ..don't think they have to get cheap stuff just cause they're in JA..that's not fair in my opinion..if she was in their shoes wouldn't she but expensive stuff ?

i know what u meant, and that is a good point, but how do I get it across?? the kids are in MoBay, so i told her maybe that's why, they are so up to date. and my point was if they mother and the father are putting together to buy, then that is a good thing. it's not like the mother is calling saying u muss buy this for her.

I believe in paying more for quality items like shoes, purses, and some clothing items. But, I have my limits. When my kids were babies and growing so quickly, they only got brand names if I found them at a good second hand shop. Otherwise, they got the payless kind. Once they got into school, I did splurge on the better namebrand tennis shoes for school because they were just too rough on them....3 pairs of Payless or 1 pair of Nike.....same difference; but less hassle on my part to just buy one good pair. Now, that their feet are more stable, I always buy the name brands. However, that being said, I do not think Gucci makes shoes any better then Nike. I wouldn't buy the Gucci sneakers just to have them say Gucci on them. Now, little Tim's are a different story (ha ha).

Seriously, you have to weigh the value of the shoes against the money spent. If they are going to get lots of wear and tear on them, then, yes, I believe they are worth it. Let's face it, babies do not wear out shoes. They grow much too fast.

Now that u mention the payless do wear out, but if they are cute i buy them and just know that i have to buy again in a couple of months. I'm a sale shopper and like to buy and put stuff down, so I would often end up getting brand name stuff at payless prices.
