Boy, 14, makes homemade bomb with recipe from Internet

Okay, when I was a kid (17 years ago), I had chemistry sets (the old fashioned type, with real chemicals.) I blew stuff up in the back yard (proper saftey, didn't hurt anyone). If the police were called, you could get a ticket for having fireworks (illegal in massachusetts), but explain that it is a chemisty experiment - no problems. I think we are getting paranoid here - after all - man has undersood how to make chemical explosives for several thousand years now. It is hardly a secret.

Times have really changed. I went on to engineering school. How are kids supposed to learn anything about chemistry or physics without actually experimenting and learning laboratory technique? (Most middle and high schools have eliminated chemistry labs for fear of litigation).

Boy, 14, makes homemade bomb with recipe from Internet
ST. PETERSBURG - A 14 year-old St. Petersburg boy was searching the Internet for tips to make his computer faster when he came across something even more interesting: Instructions for how to make a bomb with common household chemicals.

According to police, the boy tried the recipe Monday and found that it worked when he made a bomb in a plastic bottle that exploded in his backyard. So he added some of his own touches, including BB gun pellets.

He also burned a bandanna that he didn’t like. After someone complained, police arrested the boy, who is not being named because of his age, on a charge of discharging an explosive device.

russ, like you said, this is silly.

Yeah - the soda bottle bomb is a very simple idea. Put a few pieces of dry ice in a 2 liter bottle, then wait. Eventually the sealed bottle will rupture violently. About as dangerous as placing a carbonated bottle in a hot car. Truly, the kid was a threat to national security. I think extraordinary rendition is appropriate here.

Most of the scientist and engineers I know got started with backyard chemistry sets, model rockets, and things like that. You can't even buy a chemistry set now. We are raising a generation of Americans totally ignorant to science.

These guys will sell you a lot of stuff though: http://www.unitednuclear.com/

Thanks for making me read that, I am now a threat to the State. I shall turn myself in.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

What is ghetto napalm?

Napalm is just gasoline, benzine and polystyrene. These are not difficult things to obtain.

When I was a teenager we had the Anarchist's Cookbook. My brother and I used to make lime bombs in baby food jars. Kids, or people in general, will never stop finding new ways for homemade goodies. Although there are some people who need to be saved from themselves. Like the dumbasses who mix bleach and ammonia to make a super-duper cleaner.
