My wife and I are planning a road trip starting the night of our interview. We live in Southern California so it's a LONG drive. The plan is to reserve a hotel in San Fransisco well in advance, go to the interview and depending on if we get the stamp or not reserve hotels along the way as we drive.

If we don't get it, we would at the least get a couple days in SF to calm down and celebrate (or figure out what we are going to do next if denied ;) )

I just want to know realistically if I asked the IO for the stamp what are the odds of getting it if I explain this plan to them?

Thanks!

A lot of offices won't give it. Some will. I don't know about the SF office, though.

I'm not sure what the stamp has to do with celebration and hotels, though?

Green card (I-551) is not required to travel domestically, only if you leave the USA (I-551) is required to re-enter the country.

Dose your road trip include Canada or Mexico?

If they approve the green-card, then request the I-551 stamp. If they approve pending name check they don't provide the stamp, and you will need AP to travel out of the country. Edited by YuAndDan

What's an I-551 stamp and what's it good for?

Acts as interim "greencard" until physical card arrives

YMMV

My FBI namecheck has already passed (infopass appointment confirmed)

So basically I can only ask and it's up to them if they 'feel' like it or not?

Hi Bradcanuck! I have that question too before my interview coz' I did't apply for AP. Upon my interview when the officer told me that I was approved ,I immedietly asked about my plan to travelang He answered me that this I-551 will allow you to travel starting today. So don't forget to ask for it.But it depends on DO where your interview is. In Newark, they still give this stamp. Anyway Goodluck ,I wish you can have it too.

Aye. If they don't stamp (which I can't see why they wouldn't, especially if you explain you'd like to cross the border before you get the card, but then again, it is USCIS we are dealing with :P ), use your AP.

Is this correct? My understanding of the interim benefits is they are null & void at the time of approval (ie: they have been known to take EAD's at least at the end of an approved interview).

Good point! Me bad. Maybe it would be better for he and his wife to save the border crossing if they don't get the stamp. Dunno.
