EAD/SSN work question

I've got my EAD card in hand, and yesterday got a letter from the SSA office saying that I was now on the SAVE system and my SSN card is in the mail. (I wasn't when I went to the office, but it only took them 2 weeks to sort it out...phew!) Does anyone know if I can go to the office and pick up my number whilst I wait for the card (SSN card) to arrive, so I can work before I get the actual SSN card in hand?

Thanks,

Els

ps, If I get an RFE at my AOS interview, will I still be able to use my EAD/SSN for work? I've heard that when people get RFEs, it affects their EAD somehow....any advice guys?!

If the application has been cleared and your SSN record has been established, you should be able to go into any SSA office with valid ID and obtain your SSN. Normally, the SSN record is established a day or two after the application is cleared.

You can also request an SSN Verification Printout, which will give you some proof of your assigned SSN until the card arrives.

Our resident SS expert mdyoung is of course correct.

But you should have the card in just a few days.

One doesn't really need the actual card in order to work....do you md? You just need to know the number?

This is one of those situations where you might be right, but you also want to be hired, so if they ask for the card and don't have it, you could get jerked around.

Q. How can I make sure that the employee's SSN and name given to me are correct?

A. You should ask to see the SSN card, although the employee is not required to show the card unless it is readily available.

Q. What do I do if an employee says he has an SSN card but no card can be produced?

A. Tell the employee to provide his/her name as it appears on the SSN card, otherwise the employee may not get the proper credit for his/her earnings. Also tell the employee to apply for a duplicate card at any local Social Security office. He or she should receive the card in the mail within two weeks.

I never got asked for the actual card, just the number.

BTW, RFE may affect processing time for the EAD, but since you have the card on hand, it should have no effect on your work authorization.

Well I'll tell you what happened to my wife last Summer. She was being hired for a Summer job at the local Parks and Recreation and when the guy was filling out the I-9 he insisted that he had to see her Social Security card even though she had her I-551 with her. I could have told the guy he was full of s**t, but she wanted the job, so I just said OK and I drove home to get the card.
