Hi all. Here is the situation.

I am French. My wife is American (born American) and we married 7 years ago (in the US). My son was born in the US (he's American and also French), and my daughter was born in France (she is also American and French). We have been living in France for the last 6 years.

We are now thinking of relocating to the US to be closer to my wife's family.

I already found a company there wiling to hire me. We anticipate my wife would not be working. So I (ie me, the alien) would be the one earning the income for the household.

I am just at the beginning of understanding the process. Can you give me any advices on what needs to be done in order to get us there as soon as possible? Are we looking at a long process or is there some options to get us there quickly. Thanks! ;)

Your wife needs to file I-130 at the consulate.

Keep in mind she need to provide to things in order to sponsor you.

She needs to provide IRS return data, and also prove maintaining US Domicile, both are requirements of the I-864 form used to sponsor an immigrant to the USA, and in spousal cases the US citizen spouse MUST be primary sponsor.

A good place to start is by reading the guide:

you need to :

:guides:

you will be applying for an IR-1 visa and you can apply in a way known on this forum as DCF- which means directly through a local USCIS office. This is a much faster process than your paperwork going to the US and back. Go to the guides section of the forum, first read about IR-1's, then about DCF, and I'm sure if you have any other questions the good people of VJ will be happy to answer.

Here is a link to the timelines of all the VJ people who have DCF'ed in France in the last while. It should give you an idea of the processing times involved.

Thanks for all the tips. This is very useful. I hadn't find the links you provided. They are excellent.

Do you know how long it would take to become a US citizenship then afterwards? I'm still French and in France, but assuming I get the entire process started now, what kind of delays would that be?

The short story is that for the spouse of a US citizen, you must be a permanent resident for 3 years before you can apply for citizenship. The application process is taking a very long time at the moment. Who's to say how it will be when you would come to apply.

The long answer is in the guides. For instance if you spend time away from the US there are formulas to calculate when you become eligible for citizenship.

All the best.

You can file for US Citizenship after holding a green-card for 3 years if continously married to a US citizen, 5 years if not. Also there are US residency requirements for citizenship.
