If your fiance spouse or whatever falls out of status or there is a mistake on the paperwork you may be considered illegal also. It happens more often than what you would like to think, people get deported when they did not even know they had fallen out of status and they are deported and barred for it.

Good point. That does happen. It has happened to members of this online board.

That is one reason why I am against giving local law enforcement the ability to arrest illegals. USCIS makes mistakes. And more importantly, their regs are complex and I don't trust some cop who may have attended a two-day seminar on immigration law to adequately interpret the rules.

If they come and work here, and bust their @@@ to build our homes, our roads, cook our foods, then yes they deserve to have some benefits as well. Yes, they should have a permit or visa but our stupid immigration system should give it to them also and not deny it like they do so many times in third world countries!

They need a visa to come here and work. Visa first, work second. They try it the other way around.

Consider this: If there were no illegals in this country, don't you think that the employers needing the labor would have lobbied Congress long ago to allow more workers into the country legally? And don't you think Congress would have responded in a manner reflective of the economic needs of the country? But many chose not to wait for employers to lobby and for Congress to act. They chose to just sneak on in and take up a job illegally thus taking the pressing need for addt'l labor away and eliminating any need for Congressional action to secure enough labor to get the work done.

As I said before yes there were some Mexicans but not all were Mexicans. Crack jokes all you want you probably have not been discriminated against. If your fiance spouse or whatever falls out of status or there is a mistake on the paperwork you may be considered illegal also. It happens more often than what you would like to think, people get deported when they did not even know they had fallen out of status and they are deported and barred for it. Let's hope that doesn't happen to you and you are not called a wetback!Because I am Hispanic, I have been been discriminated against and hear remarks that are racist but people don't realize it.

So this is about racism now? Are you telling me the majority of the people protesting were NOT Mexican?

Honestly, this is how the media showed it. They didn't show any canadians protesting. not that i've seen anyway.

And I find a big difference between someone not realizing they are out of status and a border jumper.

I do think that it sucks that you were discriminated against because you are hispanic. that shouldn't happen. I know it does though.

ok my thoughts are all over the place. sorry. still feeling the effects of that damn stomach virus

Some people did try for a work visa and did not get it, even with proper documentation because they are from a third world country! If you are from somewhere else, yes it is possible to get a work visa. I see it alot.

I met a lot of folks on work visas. From the Philippines, Egypt and other "advanced" nations. Obviously none of these belong to the third world as those people would otherwise not stand a chance of getting a work visa. Do all people wanting a work visa get one? No. Should those that don't come anyways and work illegally? Kinda defeats the purpose of issuing visa in the first place, doesn't it?

It's this entitlement mentality that bothers me. Like the US gov't owes a visa to everyone that wants one. A visa is a privilege, not an entitlement. Why is it so hard to get that into those heads?

Don't believe everything the media feeds you!!!

Word of advice. Establish your own credibility first, before you try to knock the credibility of others.

You can start by addressing the fact that India and China send us the most H1-B (skilled work visas) and they are both poorer than Mexico is (as measured by per capita GDP).

American employers are the real criminals and the reason why this debate is taking place.

By employing illegal immigrants, this country sends the message to potential workers that it is ok to cross the border illegally. The laws are inadquate and people protest for reform of those laws to give immigrant workers a legal opportunity to do the jobs that American employers want to hire them for.

It may not solve the issue but it is a good start.....and until American employers stop employing workers that are here illegally and we don't do anything to stop it I think we should all shut the hell up.

That mixed message just doesn't work......we don't want you in our country, but if you manage to make it I'll give you $5 an hour to build that deck I've been wanting. That's hypocrisy and the system needs reform.....that's all the protesters are asking for.

It annoys me when people try to make it only into a race issue. I am sure there are plenty racist people who love situations like this in order to insult another race, but that is not what every American does.

Color of skin and nationality makes no difference to me or else why would I have married someone from as different of a place as India. What bothers me is if anyone, no matter what nationality, thinks they should get certain rights automatically and not have to do things the way almost everyone on VJ has had to do them in order to be together/enter the US. I don't hate any groups of people, but I can disagree with what they do or protest for.
