You should stop taking everything said about illegal mexicans so personally. it dont do you and Javier any good.

You've completely missed the point of my posts. First of all, this has nothing to do with me and Javier. He's not here illegally and we don't have any kids. This situation does not even relate to us. What I am saying is that the population of Mexico is not the cause of illegal immigration. How you got something about me and Javier from that is beyond me.

but isnt precisely the problem???? whole generations of kids growing up that want to work, and there are no opportunities.

There's opportunities-not great ones but still. I mean, I go to Mexico and I see the LAND of opportunity. Everyone and their mom can own and run a "taqueria" or a "panaderia" or whatever strikes your fancy.

you're always upset when someone mentions something about illegal mexicans. sorry, just an observation. i do still think you're cool :D

FWIW, anyone who has a penguin as an avatar is automatically cool with me. Just for the record, I wasn't upset in this post and I hope I didn't come across that way. I just don't agree that the population is a material factor in illegal immigration.

Melissa, first of all I love ya to bits, so please don't take what I say personally, cos it's not meant that way. but OF COURSE over-population is A factor. One of many, I'm sure...I don't pretend to know it all, but imo:

Too many people + not enough jobs = let's go to America.

How else can people survive? If I was living in a place that I couldn't make ends meet to feed my family, & there was a border that my country was attached to which I could cross, I'd do it too.

well said.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

(L) right back at ya! I understand your point. I think in this case though, population may be a driving force, but proximity is the enabler! Like you said, if it's there and you need it....

He's using the fact that they have a lot of kids and not a lot of money to partially explain illegal immigration.

Where was that claimed? I read that a lack of jobs vs. the fast growing number of working age males is the issue rather than an abundance of children vs. a lack of money. Coupled with the lack of jobs south of the border is the availability of same north of the border. This creates a push from down south which is amplified by a pull from the north. There is a major contributor (not the same or to be read as the only reason) for the migration from the south to the north. Now, to you that may translate into criticisom of having many children and no money to support them but in all reality, it is no one and the same argument.

This particular pattern can be observed in many parts of the world. Not just between Mexico and the US. ;)

Obviously no one learned anything from Pedroh's "I'm leaving post" either. Let it go people. We all know we have an illegal immigration problem. We don't have to have 50 threads a day on VJ about it. It really is getting a little old. And yeah, I know, if I don't want to read it I don't have too. I used to enjoy coming to off-topic and seeing all the different posts. Now, it's just obnoxious. You can't even enjoy it anymore.

It's a hot button issue that's not going to go away any time soon....and I would think with what we all go through to get our SO's here...ummm, yeah....we'd be talking about illegal immigration and how this whole situation is a crock...sorry you don't like it but, hey, don't blame US for what the illegals are doing. We deserve the right to bytch about it more than they they they deserve the right to protest about their so-called rights...

Ok, so then why did you get your back all up if you basically agree???? ;)

I agree. This is not going away until the media spoonfeeds us our next hot-button issue.

Well then, it will continue I guess to drive people away...people like Pedro who are tired of seeing constant thread about the terrible Mexicans. Funny, that so many people were so "sorry" to have offended him but will get right back on the ball now that he's gone.

... constant thread about the terrible Mexicans. Funny, that so many people ...

... that feel offended by discussions regarding illegal immigration are the ones that usually equate "illegal immigrant" with "terrible Mexican" or somesuch to then turn around and complain about this very equation.

The terms "illegals" and "Mexicans" are used so interchangably through all this and you know it. It is very easy to blur the line of distinction. You know what you're thinking to (not you specifically) but it's word association- a very simple concept. What's the first word that comes to mind when I say "illegal immigrant"? Be HONEST now. It's Mexican. You can say it's not, but it is. For a key example, of this read the LATEST version of the Dear President letter thread that came out I think today, and read Rocio's response to it. That letter specifically states something about these things being done for all the MEXICANS that come here. It doesn't say illegals. It doesn't say Latinos or Hispanics. It says MEXICANS.

Melissa, I understand your frustration, but I do think you're being over-sensitive. Whatever someone said in response to a 'dear Mr President' letter in another thread is really not relevant here.

Illegal immigration IS a problem...overpopulation in Mexico IS a factor...coupled, of course, with close proximity....but I haven't seen anyone here say anything about 'terrible Mexicans' other than YOU.

Well, Pedro saw it and he left. Charity and I see it. Rocio saw it this morning. The other ladies don't see it because they don't come to Off Topic. Maybe you don't see it. But we certainly do.
