DL in maiden name

Hey guys,

I just got to the US yesterday and talked to the Driver's License office today. I already have a SSN from a student exchange year back in the days, issued in my maiden name.

The lady on the phone said that I couldn't get a DL in my maiden name until I get my new SS card, but she could issue me one under my maiden name since I got a SS card with it on it.

What do you think? Should I go ahead and do that? Would it be legal? The extra cost would only be $12. I just don't want to wait for my new SS card to get my license...

Normally, all that's required is to show proof of legal name change, which would be your marriage certificate. Though, if it's not a US certificate it may be an issue. You're best to do go to the DMV web site for your State and look up their policies and procedures. Can't be much more help than that without more information.

Oh and, yes, your maiden name is still a legal name.

I know here in CT they had to issue my DL 2x's once in my maiden name (the name my original CDN driver's licence was issued under), and then the 2nd time under my married name.. They didn't charge me extra for it, but for some reason there was no way to issue it directly under my married name. Silly DMV! Are you saying the cost to upgrade to the new name would be about 12$ whenever you get your new SSN card?
