Hello to all!

i'm pretty new at this, so hopefully i won't make any mistakes..

i received my fiance visa, entered the USA on october 22nd, and we are getting married on Dec. 14th, YAY!!

but in spite of all the happiness, i was very surprised first not to be able to work right away (i guess i misunderstood the guides i was reading before arriving to the US)... well, now i understand i have to wait after the marriage and send the specific form to ask for EAD, right?

so when i found out i couldn't work yet, i decided to postpone my SSN filing. is it wrong? shall i do it right away? will the SS card say "legal alien authorized to work, or NOT?" if i file now (before the wedding) for SSN, will i have to get another one after the wedding (since i'll no longer be a single, and maybe authorized to work?) . so many questions, so many papers, so much waiting!

thank you for your answers, and a big up to the people running this website: so much valuable information!!!!

SSN are issued for life so there is no getting one before and a different one later... the only difference is the name on the card (should you decide to change it)....

Your SSN will always say that you need DHS authorization to work until you receive your greencard and have it removed by the SSA... Marriage has no bearing on this...

A K-1 is work authorized for the first 90 days... What POE did yous arrive at?

Go get your SSN right now! They will give it to you while you are not married yet, but once you are married they will say you are not a fiance/ee anymore, so come back when you have your green card. In the meanwhile, your SSN will be helfpul for other things you need to establish - like a bank account, driver's license, med. insurance, etc. So don't wait! You will just have to change your name on the SSN card later, but the number will be the same.

We got Marlene's SSN a few days after we were married. The work authorization is valid for the duration of the I-94--not until you get married. Some clerks at the SSA may not understand that very well and you may have to go around them or be prepared to challenge the notion that you are no longer authorized after marriage.

Although K1 are work authorized for the duration of the I-94, you won't be able to get employement based on that status. Even with a SSN, you won't be able to satisfy the requirement of the I-9 to work without some document showing that authorization (authorization stamp in passport or EAD). Don't count on working during the holiday season.

well i went to the SS office today. very nice lady, she filed all the papers and told me about 2 weeks to get something in the mail. she gave me a letter as a proof of SSN application and authorization for work. I still hope to get something for the holiday season, but i guess i would understand employers being stopped by my "pending SSN". maybe it'll be easier to get a job once i effectively receive my SSN card.

is there any "trick" or weird period once you get a K1 SSN and get married / and before you receive the real USCIS AOE? like a dead period where you're no longer authorized to work? i thought i understand that from other postings...

anyway!

happy thanksgiving to you all!!!

Its not mandatory but just easier if you apply before the I-94 expires.

Hurry and get the SS card NOW while it's still K1, if not there are some hoops to jump through and you may have to file K3 paperwork after marriage. That's what my SS office told us as we applied the day BEFORE we got married!

The above is wrong...........

why would the OP have to file for a K3 visa..... they are already in the US on a K1 which is valid for 90 days from entry.... they can apply for a SSN at anypoint from the day the enter up to about 2 weeks before the 90 days ends..... the K1 status does not end when they get married and the DO NOT NEED TO FILE FOR K3....
