Here is an intriguing interactive article from CBC that offers other ways in which we could spend the trillion dollars that are currently funding the War in Iraq. Recognizing that one trillion (1 followed by 12 zeros) is a hard number to fathom, this offers other ways in which to comprehend it.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/interactives/ss-trillion/

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

The problem with any analysis of this kind is that it misses the fact that the money being spent in Iraq isn't money we have - it's money we've borrowed and continue to borrow. The very idea that we should end the war in Iraq and use those monies on some other cause is fiscally irresponsible. We shouldn't be using that money at all. It's not our money to spend, it's borrowed.

Make no mistake - the next President will exploit the ignorance of the American people to justify spending of his/her own based on the fallacy that war funds are lying around, just waiting to be diverted into something more "worthy". That the Iraq war is based entirely on leverage is lost on most.

In our recent history, the only democratic president we have had has been the only fiscally conservative president. It might have helped that during most of his term, the congress was controlled by the other party. Although that didn't seem to help with Republican presidents.
