Myself and my wife just got married and we decided that we want to have a shared double barrelled surname. I came from the UK, my wife is the US citizen. I have just completed the entire filing process for the green card and have received my green card. How do I go about legally changing my name over? Is it a difficult process...who do you contact to do it?

Depends on the state your in - in Texas, for example, you would go to the DPS (DMV) and Social Security Admin. offices with your marriage certificate and that's about it - of course afterward you would need to change any banks, accounts, employer etc. by notifying them seperately. Can't speak for the UK, but here in the US it is not common for the male to assume the female's name (either by itself or hyphenated)...

Am not certain how you go about letting USCIS know though...

In many states, that would require a court order.

I live in Illinois - anyone know if a court order is required here? Also - do I have to become a US citizen for the order to be valid, as my place of birth was in the UK?

Here's a start!
