Me and my fiancee did not experience any problem with the authority by living in same room at our hotels during our trips. She had her ID card and I had my passport. Maybe just because I speak vietnamese (?). We did wear our wedding rings though. People always addressed us as mr and mrs. (anh, chi) even they knew we don't have the same last names.

That would not be a red flag anyway, because wives do not take their husbands' names in Vietnam.

None of my business, just curious, do you do all your communication in Vietnamese?

yeah, the nicer places want proof of marriage or they won't allow you to stay. I have a couple good friends who run tour companies over there and who also have contracts with many of the hotels, so my fiance and I had no real troubles with it. But I know that in most of the hotel's elevators, they have signs stating that locals are not allowed. My wife and I stayed in guest houses mostly in Saigon, and I lived with her and her grandparent's in Nha Trang for a year. The guest houses are really nice and cheap in saigon, check them out.

Back when my wife and I were engaged we traveled to many places in Vietnam. The only place where our not being married was an issue for the hotel was in Saigon. The nicer or more prominant tourist hotels had this requirement that you must have a copy of your marriage license to share the same room. One place actually made us purchase an extra room for her, although it was at a steep discount compared to the one we actually shared. Of course, when we rented the extra room no one cared that we were actually sharing the same room, and no one ever checked. Many of the less prominant mini-hotels in Saigon don't seem to have this problem, and could care less if you are married or not.

Hi All - It's been a while since I have been on here. Hope everyone is doing well.

My wife and I are going to Vietnam agian in 2008. This will be our first trip back to veitnam since she came here. WHAT do I need to do to be able to get a hotel room with her without having to be suspected of bringing a ####### to my room? :) ....Also...my wifes fiance will be going over as well and we are trying to come up with a creative way so that he and his fiance can share a room in a decent hotel. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

If they ask, just stick the Benjamin into their mouth. I'll guaranty you that they will shut up!!!!

the requierment to provide proof of marriage (in vietnam), i believe, is a long forgotten one and now only a myth. you and whom ever you choose can stay in any hotel that you desire without proof of marriage. only need provide your passports and/or her Vietnam I.D. card. you should also remember that, in any situation that may attract attention by the police, a small bribe will quickly defuse the problem (50,000 DVN or about 3 dollars).
