Someone I vaguely know (an immigrant) turns around and asks me and a friend of mine 'hey do you want to marry my friend? He'll give you $10k, you only have to be married 18 mos, and you don't even have to live together.'

Man, he got an earful!

life without parole.

You know it, Sister. The nerve of some people !

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I did threaten him with that, and I'm still contemplating what to do about it.

ETA: He claimed he was 'joking'

Wow. I would have loved to have heard what you told him.

This is a different scenario- My Aunt was shopping downtown Montreal one day with her grandson. A man walks up to her and offers her $100,000 for the baby. She said excuse me? He repeated what he said, that he would pay her 100,000 for the baby. She freaked out- she is a very loud woman. He ran off and security wasn't able to find him.

That happened to me before - in my old apartment, my downstairs neighbour asked me to marry him for 10k...he is a family father with two children and lives with his wife. They got divorced, so they could both marry a German citizen, so they wouldn't get deported.

They were a real lovely family, but I couldn't do Dad the favour. Eventually he found himself another German woman to get married to. But his "real" wife yould not find anyone, so her and the two kids (6 and 8) got deported. Dad also gave up and they moved back to their home country, which is a ex- war zone and pretty much complety destroyed.

I didn't stay in touch with them, so I don't know what happened. But I felt really sad for them. :(

While my family was vacationing in Italy a man came up to my dad and asked if he could "have" my twin sister!! My dad who is Italian said the same thing "WHAT"! The man repeated himself as if he was there to buy bread!! Of course my dad spoke very loudly and the guy left but was an impressionable experience and scared my twin very much.

So just take care when someone "jokes" or is very serious...one never knows what their REAL intention is.

Thanks for this post!

I knew about an old friend from high school who's been in the US for many years; apparently a girl told him that if he gave her the money, she would marry him. When his mother told me this (in my country), she said they (his family) were desperate and that they were actually thinking about taking that offer because he hadn't been able to travel since 1999. Big deal; like if it was a life or death thing for him... especially if they have money enough to pay for that kind of thing... All this was while I was waiting for my K1, away from my Josh for months and months, horribly depressed, but doing everything by the book. I didn't think they were too tactful with me when they asked me: "But how did you do it????".

I feel bad for judging them... but it's too much "descaro"!! (cynicism in English?).

Lisa's worth at least 20k. ;)

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Regardless of the politics of the whole thing, anyone who's gone through the process knows that 10 thousand dollars is nowhere near worth going through it! 50k might be tempting... or 100k...
