I remember when VJ had only conservative members.

I remember when noone talked religion or politics. Strangely everyone got on much better ;)

Lawyer-bashing was the trend in those days :lol:

ah those were the good ol days :P

Ahh the good ole days. Nothing but game threads as far as the eye could see.

I think we can agree the "good ole days" are a bit of a myth, all told.

To a degree....

I do have to agree that the world was a much simpler - and smaller - place before computers and the internet became common. Yes, yes.... because of the internet we have all become more familiar with the suffering or tribulations of people 4000 miles away. Unfortunately, we now tend to ignore/be ignorant of the suffering of those in our own towns or homes. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that I met my wife via the internet and I make my living due to the internet, I would happily live without it.

I disagree that the "good old days" are a myth. We have 10 year olds these days who know about - and do - things that were complete mysteries to those of us who are older. Honestly, I think innocence and hometown roots were preferrable to the way things are now. Yes, we have more knowledge now, and it's more readily available. Does knowledge really equal "better" or "happy" though? I don't think it does.

IMO all it comes down to is that everyone can find some good memories of particular times in their lives that they relate to. That's fine - but a stretch I think to go from that to suggesting, for instance, that things statements like "things today are so much worse", or indeed that people today are "less happy than people years ago". That might be true if we woke up under some sort of dictatorship, but generally speaking - not so much... IMO of course.

You'd be surprised how little of a change can make happy to unhappy.

6 years ago I was paying 99 cents for a gallon of gas. Today I am paying $3.15. That makes me unhappy. For me, as a gasoline user, the good ole days were 6-7 years ago. By your definition, they do exist and are true. I am much less happy these days due to the huge chunk of my income that gasoline takes. Gas prices today are much worse than they were 6-7 years ago. As such, things like milk are much more expensive, too. Milk went from $1.99/gallon to $4.25/gallon almost overnight. Yeah....I long for the good ole' days of 2000.

I think it also defines how you quantify happiness – gas prices (or money) are one measure, but certainly not the only one that goes into making you happy.

Money doesn't make me happy.

However, a shortage of it DOES make me unhappy.

Whoever said "Money can't buy happiness" was a moron. If the only thing keeping you from being truly happy is money, then money can indeed buy happiness.

True - but I don't think its the defining guidepost of how happy you are in your life.

I used to make more money in the UK than I do now, but I hated my job. I also was doing the whole long-distance relationship thing on-and-off from 2001.
