OK, I admit that I wish CB radios were still all the rage. I was a wee tyke in their heyday and feel like I missed out.

I remember when VJ had only conservative members.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I remember when noone talked religion or politics. Strangely everyone got on much better ;)

Ahh the good ole days. Nothing but game threads as far as the eye could see.

I think we can agree the "good ole days" are a bit of a myth, all told.

To a degree....

I do have to agree that the world was a much simpler - and smaller - place before computers and the internet became common. Yes, yes.... because of the internet we have all become more familiar with the suffering or tribulations of people 4000 miles away. Unfortunately, we now tend to ignore/be ignorant of the suffering of those in our own towns or homes. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that I met my wife via the internet and I make my living due to the internet, I would happily live without it.

I disagree that the "good old days" are a myth. We have 10 year olds these days who know about - and do - things that were complete mysteries to those of us who are older. Honestly, I think innocence and hometown roots were preferrable to the way things are now. Yes, we have more knowledge now, and it's more readily available. Does knowledge really equal "better" or "happy" though? I don't think it does.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

IMO all it comes down to is that everyone can find some good memories of particular times in their lives that they relate to. That's fine - but a stretch I think to go from that to suggesting, for instance, that things statements like "things today are so much worse", or indeed that people today are "less happy than people years ago". That might be true if we woke up under some sort of dictatorship, but generally speaking - not so much... IMO of course.

And I'd like to add (from an educator's pov) that the internet, while bringing information closer and making it more readily available has also caused a huge "dumbing down" of an entire generation of students. There are kids who think that this is an appropriate email to send his/her teacher:

I will not b @ skool 2day cuz I be sick. Can u send me HW?
(a sad but true email)

And plagiarism is more readily acceptable today too.

Yeah, I met my SO on the internet and computers are his line of work too, but what happened to good old fashioned reading a book, writing a "real" letter, having conversations with people and being happy in our own lives without the need for more/better/faster?

OMG. I'm old.
