MD driver's license

My husband is the US citizen but in essence we are both just starting out as he moved to the US only last year. He has a foreign license. He tried getting his MD license last year but failed the actual driving test because he failed to stop long enough at a stop sign. On his 2nd visit, MVA refused to have him use his uncle's vehicle for the test because the windshield's tint was abt an inch too long. Which is weird because that was the same car he used during his first take.

He was able to get by without driving as his office building is right across the street, but now we REALLY need to buy a car and be able to get around. What are other options to get a driver's license if we don't have our own car? We do have a few friends who are willing to bring him but their cars are not in top condition and most surely wont be accepted by the MVA. The ones whose cars are in good condition are either not willing to do it or can't do it because of their busy work schedules or dislike of being at the MVA...which of course we understand.

Is anyone aware of a feasible way to obtain the use of a car for the purpose of taking a driving test? I really want to get this license ordeal done and over with...Help please.... :help:

Take a driving school class, most of them allow you to use the car for the driving test for an additional fee. It seems your husband doesn't know the rules of the road yet so thats why he failed so easily. On a stop sign or stop light, you have to come to a complete stop and look both ways, regardless of there are cars coming or not (basic road test), thats a failure automatically. Regarding the tint, know your state law tint rules, as in the case of MD, the police can stop you and fine you if they find that the car you are using does not conform to their state tint law. Most officers do not pull you over for the tint law unless you were speeding or failed to stop at a light. Being an inch off for the tint on the window, the driving inspector didnt take much notice of it or just let it slipped by so your husband can take the test, he probably jotted it down when he failed for the stop sign and made a note to check for it the next time he took the test. Your friends can still lend them the car if they are willing to, the car doesnt have to be in top condition, as long as it passes the inspection when MVA inspects the car (no ignition light), then you are fine to use that car. I had my friend use my beat up 1987 Toyota Corola back in 2004 to take his driving test, we just had to have it car washed prior to his driving test. Good luck!

rlpolo78 gave you good advice.

Try to go about the list of driving schools in your area & inquire about their rates for such special appointment. Since no car was available for me on my road test, I called up one driving school and made appointments. It wasn't cheap at all though, but sometimes you have to go the extra mile if you want things to happen. That's what I did.

Thank you both for the advice! We'll definitely be calling the driving schools in the area. Also just earlier, a friend from out of state told me that zipcars allow clients to use their car for the driving test so I might try calling them too. I really am hoping to get a car soon....it's getting too cold to be waiting outside for the bus! Thanks again guys!!!

sahara,

zipcar can be rented by hour which is convenient, and all their cars are road-worthy so that shouldn't be a problem. however... to join the zipcar - if you have an out of country licence - they require your driving record from home country. all details are up on their website. there are different levels of membership... take a look, you might find out it will suit your needs for now!

i will rent a zipcar for my driving test in San Francisco next month (using my australian licence), but i have joined zipcar recently so i can drive it. they don't care what the reason for renting is, but they will not let you join unless you've had a state licence for at least 12 months OR a clean driving record on your valid out of country licence. we rent zipcar all the time and now i will be driving with aus licence for the next 12 months until my CA licence becomes "valid" for zipcar!

good luck!

ausqueen

PS: getting my driving record from Sydney took only a few days, and zipcar approved me overnight. it was easy!

EAD - 18 October '07 - hard copy: valid from the date of 1st notice of card production

SSN - 30 October '07 (married name), applied Oct 18, same day I got my EAD

DL - 11 December '07 - driving test at DMV San Francisco. Yay! Now I can drive on the "wrong" side of the road!

Thanks for the valuable info ausqueen! I will contact our local land transpo. office to make the request.

Being able to rent a car is very useful indeed and zipcar's hourly rental is really convenient! Good luck with your driving test next month! Thanks again...
