Moving things over

Hi.

I just have a question about moving some of my stuff over to the States prior to myself moving. You see, my fiance is coming over to see me in the next few months, and I was wondering whether customs would allow him to take a suitcase of my belongings over with him. I understand that there is a monetary limit of goods which a person entering the States is allowed to bring back, but I dont know whether this counts if he was just moving some off my stuff over prior to my emigration. The last thing I want is for him to get stung at customs on his way back and have to pay to bring my belongings into the country.

Any advice?

I would think that as long as he is not over his baggage allowance that is a good idea. It does not matter whose stuff is in the case.

The way I understand it, it's items purchased during your visit that you would have to pay duty on.

we did that the last time my fiancé was with me - he brought one suitcase inside a larger one, on the way over, and then packed the second one with all sorts of random stuff to go back... he had no problem whatsoever

and some of it was new stuff we bought together, but none of it very expensive - we just found this fabulous kitchenware in a place in Prague and went a little silly buying our first house things together

Thanks for your replies. I assumed everything would be fine, but just thought I'd check before I packed him off with my worldly belongings. Going to strive for a flight with BMI.... allowance of 2 bags weighing 32kg (and thats just for my shoes)

Ha ha! If I seriously was to weigh all my shoes it would not surprise me that they would be pretty heavy, Im a bit of a collector you see

Just going to have to be ruthless when it comes to moving over and send a lot of them to that great big shoebox in the sky.
