Oh I forgot that one! My ex told me that even if he doesn't have other wives now, he will definitely have many other wives! Add being muslim into the equation and definitely he will have more wives. I was upset at first, but now I say, it's okay, I'm the first wife, I have the place of honor!

Okay, another one that I just remembered. My friend told me that she heard that when they have an orgasm they have to ask Allah to forgive them. That was the first time I had ever heard that one!

I have a good one. One of my co-worker asked me whether we have houses in Africa. I told him no, we live on the trees, and we have given the biggest tree in Africa to the American Ambassador. He is enjoying living on there. He felt very stupid after all.

LOL! My husband works at a hospital and he too give answers that are out of this world! I often tell him - honey they don't know so you have to educate them. He says - the questions are ridiculous. Therefore, I give them a ridiculous answer.

Prior to marrying my husband I had a so called 'good friend' warn me that Africans are known to have more than one wife. I politely said to her "at least Africans tell you they already have another wife, whereas here in America, some men will deny everything while looking you straight in the eyes"

I hear all the same things... does he speak english?, they have cars?!?!, they beat their wives (all 20 of them), one person actually asked me if he eats off rocks and rides elephants.

I let them know how ridiculous they sound.. I tell them yep that's all true. He logs onto his laptop to talk to me every night while sitting around the fire with his family wearing a loin cloth with goats blood smeared on his face. His family is busy sharpening sticks for the lion hunt in the morning. Don't worry he doesn't hunt with them, he hops on his pet giraffe and rides to work every morning.

After they realize I'm being sarcastic, I like to show them this picture of my husband and son to remove all doubt..

LagosNigeria2007173.jpg

That usually gets a few open mouthed stares. There were a lot of comments about us having mixed kids till I actually did. Now they wouldn't dare be so ignorant. A lot of people thought that would be a major hardship on my other kids. They thought my other kids would be teased about it. So far so good.. and even if it does come up my kids can handle it. They have always been taught that we are all God's children.

Sometimes the comments are funny, it is amusing to see how truly ignorant some people are. Sometimes it's just downright insulting. But I'd have to say, most people are genuinely curious and want to learn about another culture. I certainly never get tired of talking about it!
