hmmm ..the FAA needs an overhaul...

Didn't you hear? The FAA has now been combined with the USCIS to save money. The overhaul has been completed  When one of the pilots called the tower, they got put through to customer service who told them there were no other planes in the sky for thousands of miles.

30,000 people die every year in traffic accidents in the US.

The only significant air accident in the US since 9/11 was a comair crash last year with only 49 fatalities. There were other accidents involving planes, but none resulted in fatalities.

http://www.airfleets.net/home/accident.htm has all the accident reports involving airplanes.

What about the American Airlines crash in Queens, November 2001? 251 people on the plane and 5 on the ground were killed...

Then you have the Georege Carlin comment,

Why do they call it a Near Miss, It is not a Near Miss but a near hit. Having two planes crashing into each other is a Near miss.

Got to love that guy

It's called a "Near Miss" because the planes were "near" each other when they missed crashing into each other. It corresponds to "nearly hit," meaning they almost hit but didn't.

While the AA crash in Brooklin was the worst since 9/11, there were even more fatal crashes since then:

Those ones are not covered on the site since they are not passenger jets. But I did miss the AA crash. Its on the list as well. But that still doesn't change my original point, flying is much safer than driving.

I think your chances of surviving a car crash are a little better than a air crash. Usually when a plane goes down, we aren't talking about 1 or 2 individuals either. If your car breaks down, you pull to the side of the road...where does a plane go? :help:

They're not passenger jets? What would you suggest they are? Cargo planes?

This shouldn't even be an issue. As stated, they were actually very far apart, and the "error" on the part of the FAA was only reported to make the system even more safe in the future.

Out of all the plane crashes reported, how many are actually a result of mid-air collisions?

Jets require jet engines, those planes have propellers. The airfleets.net site doesn't cover those types of planes.
