My husband can call USCIS, but he cannot hold for more than 10 minutes. I have credit on skype and was wondering if I could call USCIS to check on the status. What say, people? I am the beneficiary.

The operator will give you the same info that is available using USCIS case status website. Not until 30-60 days past 6 months from filing will they give you anything more.

For the most part, yes they give the same status as on the site, but you certainly don't have to wait for 30 days past 6 months to get something more. Plenty of VJers get actual info at/around the 6 month mark (myself included).

Don't know if they will give any info to beneficiary though.

Forget Skype. Skype sucks. Get one of the voip programs from the internet, such as JustVoip.com, or VoipDiscount.com. You buy $10eu of credit and call landlines and cell phones in the US unilimited. My wife and I only use Skype when we're computer to computer. However, when one of us is not at a computer, we use JustVoip.com.
