is this film completely animated?

They had the real actors act in front of a blue screen for the majority of the scenes with motion sensors on them, and then they did the CGI using the actors placement readings afterwards.

So the actors did act but it is totally CGI on screen.

I get really ####### and nitpicky and literature nerdy about movies based on literature. Since I've been teaching Beowulf for 9 years and had to read the damn thing in graduate school in its original form (yeah, that didn't work so well) I don't think I can see this movie.

Plus, Angelina Jolie annoys me. :)

And she wears high heels in the trailer.

Did they have stiletto-shoes in the dark ages?

Visually its pretty cool, especially if you go to see it on a 3D screen. They do quite a few things to kinds push things into your face. Some of the acting seemed a bit awkward though and the the story could be better.

Its actually visually part of her body. It kind of fits the art style they were striving for.

"Never take a class where they make you read Beowulf"
So what do you do when the course is mandatory?

(Calgary, grade 7 "Language Arts"--modernised English, but still not a nice read)

We saw this today and liked it a lot. I thought the ambiguous ending was pretty good, wasn't in the original story at all - but thematically it worked.

Animation was good closeup - (especially Anthony Hopkins, although John Malkovich's character was pure caricture) but when multiple characters were on-screen I kept thinking of the Shrek films for some reason.

It's showing at a nearby Imax in 3D...I'm tempted to go see it now. :)

No - there isn't a 3D theatre near us, just a regular theatre.

BTW - Crispin Glover (Marty McFly's dad from Back to the Future) plays Grendel...

I just can't think of Glover other than as nerdy George McFly

Wouldn't either Thomas F. Wilson (Biff/Buford Tannen--bully in all BTTF) or Chris Lloyd (mad prof Brown) have been more suitable for the role (edit: Lloyd played the villain in "who framed Roger Rabit?")
