mostly, to feel humanistic..but to, also recieve advice on what to look for in employees that may be TOV (threat of violence) or depression

what's the general rule of thumb in your work regarding the best day to fire someone? i've heard it's friday afternoon, that way they have all weekend to cool off.

I've seen that a lot too. Friday afternoon followed by a oh-so-gracious "take the rest of the day off" to those who remain.

yeah, get the potential targets out of the area, call the swat team, and head to a bar on the far side of town :P

Do you know anyone who has been laid off in the last few weeks? A few good friends have been laid off in the last few months, all from different firms.

This feels like 2001 all over again.

I was laid off in 2001. In fact, we were supposed to be notified on September 11, but given the events, the mucky-mucks decided it would be "tacky" and waited until September 13. The company was a small computer book publisher with about 100 employees total. The layoffs came as quite a surprise. Our department of about 20 had just hired five people within the previous month, all laid off in the first round. One guy had started only the week before.

It was just like you see in the movies--we were called into a room and given a brief, somewhat apologetic speech by the CEO. Each of us got an envelope with a token severance check. And then the box to pack up your stuff and make a hasty exit, with hired thugs standing at the door. It was a really weird experience.

My husband was laid off in early 2007 - he worked in auto industry though so it was no shock although still sucks. Auto industry hasn't been really good this year at all. Good thing he got another job in April. Looks like he would be safe in his current job for a while.

My company is actually hiring, no layoffs in sight and if there are going to be any I would be one of the first to know.

My 3 closes girlfriends all work in the banking industry and they are suffering but 1 of them is on straight commission so she won't get laid off. The other 2 work in the bank and would be the ones doing the layoffs. I haven't seen any indication from them that there will be any.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

Not personally. But my best friend is in HR for an insurance company up in NJ and had to let a couple people go on Wednesday due to financial contraints. And Derek has a friend that works for Chevy Chase Bank who said that they were going to start doing major lay-offs (300+) before the holidays. Merry Effin' Christmas.

Insurance and banking are going to be hit hard. I'm in the insurance world myself, have been for close to a decade now. I'm eager to see how this plays out.

Imagine my suprise, I was hired in September, had more people newly hired in October, and by end of October "hey everyone, we're closing up, everyone will be laid off in December".

James company is about to send a couple of blokes next week for drug tests, using hair. More than likely they will fail and lose their jobs. He has written them both up for the dumbest of things that could have potentially hurt other workers in the last couple of weeks and sent one home. With his company you only get 3 written warnings over 2 years before auto losing your job.

They are hiring lots of peeps there at the moment so if anyone knows anyone in Birmingham AL who needs a factory job, can pass a drug test, it is very physical but there are a few women working there, PM me.

I work for the mortgage arm of a large national home builder. so far about 30 percent of the workforce has been laid off from the builder (in our regional division) and slightly less from us in the mortgage office. Surprisingly we continue to sell new houses, although at a much lower speed and at very discounted prices than a year or two ago. at least once a week I have a panic attack about job security.

I've been layed-off numerous times (20+). It's part of the nuclear lifestyle. I have no problem moving to find new work.
