We have a savings account, two retirement accounts, stocks and equity in our home. We are hoping to be able to spend part of our time in the RP, part of our time in Colorado and time traveling.

Since I first posted, we have eliminated 3 credit cards worth of debt, and doing well on my student loan. Our emergency fund is doing ok. Once we pay off my student loan, a Roth IRA is next!

I already had a little bit saved - my "rainy day" fund. There is already a budget in place which includes my car payment. Once the car is paid off, we're going to put the same amount as the car payment into the "nest egg." That will build it up faster.

I would say it really matters how old you are.

We have some money, but I would say that compared to others of our age is nothing. So saying that you have savings of 10K it matters a lot how old is the individual saying it.

Ana

Absolutely right!

Since we would like to retire in Europe in about 10-15 years, we try to save about 12% of our paychecks each months and so far manage quite nicely. We are lucky, our employer contributes, too.

This is an interesting topic, and one that has come up many times for my husband and me lately.

We each have a separate checking account, as well as a joint checking account. I have an online savings account as well, and I'm trying to put a little bit in there each month, but once we get a decent chunk in there, we end up spending it on travel (our honeymoon, etc). I've just made a deal with myself that whenever I get a bonus from work, I'll put half of the bonus in there, which I just did. Our yearly property taxes and insurance will come out of that fund, as we are in the middle of buying our first home and I want to have time to build up enough money in there to pay that stuff when it comes due next year.

We are now putting our money into our house, so we're going to be broke for a while, but I am getting ready to open up a 401(k) which will have some matching funds from my employer. My husband and I are both looking to change jobs at some point, so I am hoping one of us will find something a bit better paying within the next few months. If so, our plan is to have the extra funds deposited in our savings account directly so we can save that money.

It's always good to take advantage of FREE MONEY, it's basically what it is regarding company match 401K. The other advantage of 401k, It reduces your taxes at the end of the year. The amount you contribute for the year is deducted from your gross income.

I try to save as much as possible...Roth, 401k, emergency fund, and I have a pension. I can only put so much aside as it's pretty difficult to save with bills, and the cost of living always seems to increase where as cost of living increases don't always follow.
