Barry Bonds indicted on perjury, obstruction charges

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday for perjury and obstruction of justice, charged with lying when he told a federal grand jury that he did not knowingly use performance-enhancing drugs.

If convicted on all five counts, baseball's home run king could go to prison for up to 30 years.

"During the criminal investigation, evidence was obtained including positive tests for the presence of anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing substances for Bonds and other athletes," the indictment read.

The indictment culminated a four-year investigation into steroid use by elite athletes.

John Burris, one of Bonds' attorneys, did not know of the indictment before being alerted by The Associated Press. He said he would immediately call Bonds to notify him.

"I'm surprised," Burris said, "but there's been an effort to get Barry for a long time. I'm curious what evidence they have now they didn't have before."

Bonds has repeatedly denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. He has never been identified by Major League Baseball as testing positive.

30 years for lying about using steroids? Come on, that's a bit harsh! You don't even get that for rape or robbery. A knew a guy that tried to hire a hit man to kill his girlfriend and he only got nine years I think, surely that's a lot worse than lying about using gear.

Yeah, Federal charges and punishment is 10x worse for even the same things. I wish they pressed the Federal charges against the person who stole my identity.

As for Barry, as long as his record ball goes into the hall of fame with the asterisk I will be satisfied. That one act alone is going to bother that arrogant, world seriesless, selfish tard to the day he dies.

Good to know there are other Bonds haters out there. I don't know why he didn't just admitt it. There is no way he wasn't using. You don't hit more home runs at 42 than you did at 32 or 25. It just doesn't work. It is only logical that he has been using. You don't get in better shape the older you get, you don't get stronger He stole the record and he doesn't deserve it, and he deserves to be punished. He was a role model for kids and he is telling them it is okay to lie in court and take enhancement drugs. Sorry I will end my rant now.
