OTTAWA -- Two Americans who deserted the U.S. Army to protest the war in Iraq lost their bid for refugee status in Canada on Thursday.

The Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear an appeal from the two men, Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughey, of decisions by immigration authorities -- backed in two subsequent court rulings -- that they were not refugees in need of protection.

Opposing the war believing that it was illegal and immoral, they deserted when they learned their units would be deployed to Iraq, and came to Canada.

If you signed the line, they own you. They should have declared Conscientious Objector, and went into a non-combat role. Now they are felons.

Yup. Even the most avid pacifist knows the Army kills people. Unless you are trying to scam a free college education out of the deal.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Wasn't this done about 40 years ago

Nope, 40 years ago it was people dodging the draft. Now its active soldiers who are already members of the armed forces, volunteers who didn't want to be sent to Iraq, so they jumped the border. Big difference.

Surprising that as they're volunteers, they didn't figure out VW (request to withdraw); oh, maybe they did--because it would hit them in pocket to get home, so they decided to pull a stunt.

Also, 40 years ago, you had a draft-dodger in the then Justice Minister (Pierre Trudeau, whose father bribed Pierre's way out of WW2 draft in 1939), a powerful position (Trudeau would become PM in 1968), where today no such:

  • Canada wasn't actively involved in wars between 1977 and 1994 (Harper was born in 1959)
  • Carter had given draft-dodgers amnesty

Plus, Canada was hit between 1985 and 1993 by several US criminals claiming "persecution" and applying for refugee status, among them Lawrencia "Bambi" Bembenek (an erstwhile Milwaukee cop convicted of murder--caught while working as a tavern waitress due to the pub's TV ironically showing AMW) and Charles Ng (a convicted CA murderer).

Both seems to have or are running away from their responsibilities
