I don't think it does directly. Pedophiles are naturally drawn to careers where they will have the respect and trust of their victims - so that's one factor, which is why we see a lot of Boy Scout Leaders and teachers being caught. The priesthood is a very noble calling, and unfortunately, a lot of nuts are drawn to it with either delusional ideas of grandeur or that by giving their whole life to the service of Christ, they may be given the strength to overcome their bad behavior. The Catholic Church needs to filter who they accept into the priesthood, and they need to give that opportunity to women, and especially to married persons.

Catholism, letting women in?

It'll happen someday. :)

I wish, Steven. But that + getting rid of the celibacy vow + BC are a long long way off, if ever.

This specific issue aside. The idea that priests must remain celibate seems the root of the majority of these issues. That is a ridiculous expectation to ask of any living breathing human being.

As far as pedophilia is concerned, they only have a sexual attraction to children. The only way this is going to be determined, is through a penile plethysmograph. This isn't exact science, and I know pedophiles who have been able to "fake" the test.

Being celibate is NOT the root of these issues. We are not "animals" who have uncontrollable sexual desires. We have choices, and we can choose to remain celebate. Look at many "spinster" and "bachelor" aunts and uncles we may all have. Have they gone out and committed sexual offences because they haven't "had it"?

This priest in the article was not a pedophile anyway. He was someone who made some bad choices. I don't care of the female prisoner was stripping in front of him...just by virtue of the difference in power, makes this not conscentual.

maybe i was a wee bit harsh callin him a perv but at the end of the day........ he broke his vow of celibacy.......... he should be stripped of his priesthood and ex-communicated from the catholic church.

He is not a good role model, nor are the rest of the catholic priests that partake in sexual activities, whether consent was given or not. They should be horse-whipped!!

The Catholic Church needs to re-affirm its stance on its vow of celibacy, this whole malarky is a disgrace. They try to tell us one thing but our priests do another.

The Catholic church needs to re-evaluate a lot of things, including priests & celibacy. It's silly in this day & age.

The Ctholic Church needs to wake up and smell the coffee. If they don't want the church to die out they need to face the fact that women would make good priests as would married men. These ideas thay had way back when no longer apply to life today. The Catholics need to evolve!

And before anyone jumps all over me, I am a Catholic.

It won't happen with this Pope, but it will happen hopefully within our lifetime. :)

I agree, Steven. This Pope is too conservative. But I do believe we will see some major changes, and hopefully before I'm an old lady!

you are 100% correct..and what he did was a crime....and i know how all these vjers are against illegals cause they are breaking the law, so where is the outrage?

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

They are here legally & probably USCs, huge difference.

PS: I am not outraged at every law breaker.

Completely agree. He's a human being with rights just like all of us. Sex is not dirty, it's a natural, normal thing for two consenting adults.

Well, the traditional vow of celibacy was for the ordained clergymen(women) to dedicate their lives in service of Christ. It's a noble idea, but I think that many, if not most people cannot live up to that ideal.

(Edit) I would add that Buddhist monks also take a vow of celibacy and they seem to have better success with it.

Or maybe it's just not publicized when they don't.

Do you know anything about the filtering process for Priests? It's much more complicated then you imagine.
