Well, the traditional vow of celibacy was for the ordained clergymen(women) to dedicate their lives in service of Christ. It's a noble idea, but I think that many, if not most people cannot live up to that ideal.

(Edit) I would add that Buddhist monks also take a vow of celibacy and they seem to have better success with it.

Not sure what the expectation is for Catholic clergy, but in Buddhism it's usually understood that a monk can leave whenever he wants. Sure some end up staying until the end of their lives, but many will just do it for a few months or maybe even a few years, and then go back to normal life.

I would have a much easier time of abstaining from sex for several months (I mean, I am right now, as I hope many of you who aren't with your mates are doing), or perhaps even years if I was that committed, as opposed to the thought of never getting any again...ever

There's been talk of changing the vow of celibacy to not be a lifetime commitment. I think the Buddhists have the right idea.

This specific issue aside. The idea that priests must remain celibate seems the root of the majority of these issues. That is a ridiculous expectation to ask of any living breathing human being.

I don't think it does directly. Pedophiles are naturally drawn to careers where they will have the respect and trust of their victims - so that's one factor, which is why we see a lot of Boy Scout Leaders and teachers being caught. The priesthood is a very noble calling, and unfortunately, a lot of nuts are drawn to it with either delusional ideas of grandeur or that by giving their whole life to the service of Christ, they may be given the strength to overcome their bad behavior. The Catholic Church needs to filter who they accept into the priesthood, and they need to give that opportunity to women, and especially to married persons.
