Is calling the cops in question "pigs" necessary? Really?

These cops? I've seen the video, so yes. They lived up to the worst cop stereotypes in existence - the word for cops who do that is pig.

you left out a few key points in your op.......

Looking agitated, he paces back and forth through an automatic door, which he jams open with chairs and a table.

At one point, he takes a computer off a counter and throws it to the ground, as airport security guards stand close by.

Sure. So let's step on his neck and taser him again. Nice.

It's come to the point where if you step out of line, you die. And people justify it.

You know, the Nazis may not realize it, but they actually won in WW2.

I am NOT justifying what they did, I think it was rather excessive (and I didn't watch the video to come to this conclusion).

I just object to calling them pigs, c'est tout. :)

agitated but not violent.. I understand the using of the taser, but I think they fried him too much, and actually probly the taser wasn't the problem, but the way the put him on the ground, he couldn't breath.. that's the worse part.. as a cop they know when they are actually making the person not breathe.. heck, u don't have to be a cop to notice that

ah but you can take that up with the op, he titled the thread "Canadian RCMP tasers a 40-year old Polish immigrant to death"

Such a shame... why in the world did they not call a translator? It looked like he was damaging physical property, but not threatening people. Surely a few minutes could've been spared to find the guy someone to talk to!

I define winning as their legacy living on. Clearly, it does. Dissent is punishable by death and people justify it.

oh please. there was no premeditation. you're stretching that just a bit.

VANCOUVER, Canada (AFP) — A video showing the dramatic last moments of a Polish immigrant who died after police shocked him with a Taser and restrained him at Vancouver's airport last month.

Robert Dziekanski, 40, of Pieszyce, Poland, was tasered and restrained by police on October 14 after going on a rampage out of frustration for waiting 10 hours for his mother.

He spoke no English and died minutes later while being attended by an emergency medical team.

The incident is under investigation by local police, by Canada's national police complaints commission and by an independent coroner's service. The Polish embassy has filed a formal diplomatic note asking Canada for full disclosure of the incident.

Walter Kosteckyj, the victim's family lawyer, said he was disturbed by the video because Dziekanski was not violent. "I was expecting to see a confrontation" with police, he told AFP.

VANCOUVER -- The decision by the police to subdue Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver International Airport with a Taser was "inappropriate" because the four officers present should have been able to physically control him, says an American policing expert.

After watching the video of Dziekanski's death, Michael Lyman said that the police should have been able to restrain the Polish visitor using their hands.

"I don't even think batons or mace would have been necessary given that there were four officers on the scene."

Mr. Lyman, a criminal justice professor at Columbia College in Missouri, said that the police "appeared to take the path of least resistance by deploying the Taser . . . when they could have controlled this gentleman through physical force techniques that would not have been harmful."

...

Mr. Lyman was also concerned about the way one of the officers repeatedly struck what appeared to be a baton on the floor near the prostrate Dziekanski.

...

Lyman also said that it wasn't clear from the video whether the police "were positioned on top of the gentlemen in a fashion that would keep him from being able to breathe properly."

...

Donald Van Blaricom, former chief of the Bellevue police, said that the officers should have made Dziekanski sit up as soon as possible after he was Tasered.

"He's down on the floor for an awful long time and it appears that they are holding him down when he is in handcuffs because he is struggling."

...

"He's being held face down on his chest and he responds by struggling because he can't breathe."

I agree, tasers are just a bad idea. I saw this video on the news last night, it's sickening. I can't watch it again, however from the one I saw on the news it left me wondering, at the end of it - where the guy is rolling up the tazer wire and the guy on the floor isn't moving - and they seem to realize it - some guy in a suit comes over to check for a pulse - did they perform CPR?

I agree its pretty bad – and it sounds like there should be an inquest at the very least.

I’m still shocked by what happened to the man in the London Underground a couple of years ago. There were justifications made for that based on the initial reports that the man first jumped a ticket barrier, then tried to run when confronted (both of which were totally false according to the video evidence) and with it being a couple of days after the 7/7 bombings that itchy trigger fingers were somehow justified. Even the govt went through the barest wringing of hands over what happened.

None of the officer’s involved in that were ever charged with anything (apparently for "lack of evidence"), and so far the only thing come out of it so far is a legal indictment against the institution itself – under health & safety laws, which resulted in a pitiful financial settlement.
