It took jurors roughly three days to return a death sentence for Derek Chappell, who was convicted in August in the first-degree murder of Devon Hinman Shackleford.

Woulda taken me roughly 3 seconds. I say stuff the ba$tard in the pool and hold him down 'till he drowns. Bring 'im out, revive him, and do it all over again about 6 times so he can get a taste of how that poor baby felt.

Chappell had been accused of choking Devon in December 2003, and state Child Protective Services had warned Devon's mother, Kristal Shackleford, to cut ties with Chappell.

But defense attorneys said the couple resumed their relationship.

Im with Welshie on this one. The mother ought to be held partially responsible for knowingly putting her child in dangerous company. I could never stick with someone who harmed my child.

I'm sorry, although I am sure she is going through hell right now, but if I had my way the mother would be doing time also.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

It makes me cringe and think about how innocent my 2 year old is and could never imagine how the mother feels.

Well, she obviously wasn't that concerned if she didn't get away from this guy when he first tried chocking the kid... I'm sorry, but if someone tried hurting my child it wouldn't take a third person to tell me to get my child the hell away from that person.

She should be held responsible as well, if she had put her child first when it first happened he might still be alive today....

Duh!!! but still the pain isnt any less

more on the story...

During the trial, prosecutors said the child’s death on March 11, 2004, was a result of jealousy. “This case is about a love triangle,” said prosecutor Patricia Stevens.

Chappell began dating the child’s mother, Krystal Shackleford, in September 2003, and they moved in together that December. Shackleford said she met Chappell in an English class at Mesa Community College.

"He was a nice guy, really sweet, really genuine," she said in 2004.

But the couple broke up, Shackleford said, after the first time Chappell tried to hurt her son, Devon.
