Jenn this is really for you....could I have learned Italian? Absolutely...surely that goes without saying. But at the end of the day, when a child is taught a second language, it's soaked up quickly & easily. Do you agree? I did not dedicate the time nor the energy to learn the language...because, well...it was more important and practical to learn Spanish. I don't have the time to learn 2 languages...and tbh, even if I did learn Italian....I'd have no one to speak it with! My family stopped speaking Italian with my great-grandparents.... for various reasons...this is the point that I was making, and now has been so ridiculously pulled apart. I sometimes forget where I am lately, that I have to make sure there's not one thing in a post that can be taken out of context & beaten to death!

That doesn't still mean I would have loved to have been taught it at a time when it would be damn easy to pick up. And before anyone starts ragging on my intelligence....I graduated high school at 16 with a full college scholarship...so it';s not a question of lack of intelligence. But we've all seen those little kids running around that are speaking two languages...and I think that's kinda cool! So sue me

Bro Dean...thank you!

I hear you. Same thing happened in my family too. The language died with my great-grandparents, too. I feel very lucky that I was able to dedicate a part of my life to learning a language that is important to me and my family. I hope to start the tradition up again with my own descendants.

And while it is most definitely easier to learn young (in Italy I worked at an international school where kids were bilingual, and even trilingual by the age of four), it is never too late to learn!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

the thing is, whether you learned Spanish or Italian or or or, as a child, if you learned just one alternate language, you can learn more, and more easily than someone who didn't learn a second language as a child.

There's a language switch in the brain, and if we turn it on early enough, like my Mum did when my sisters and I were toddling, its easier later in life to learn other languages. My grandfather was German, I met the man only once in my entire life, and yet I went and took German in high-school so I could maybe go visit Germany one day and be able to passably get along.

Being Canadian I started learning French early in life. My Mum started teaching us when she started teaching us to talk, both English and French. she's not bi-lingual, she's 6th generation Canadian of Irish and Scottish decent. But Canada is offcially bi-lingual and you can get on better if you know both languages.

I've found in the past few years that my knowledge of French helps me understand Spanish, and other languages of Latin origin. Having gone to Roman Catholic school when I was a kid also helped with some Italian, tho mostly understanding food and swear words. ;)

Teach your children well :) Heck, even my dogs are multi-lungual. We even taught them some Elvish

So..anyone think the Aussies are WRONG? Or right but a bit harsh about it? Or RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT?

I am gonna go for #2..but thats cos Im such a wuss about confrontation :innocent:

The UK tends to be a bit of a melting pot - possibly due to our historical habit of absorbing other cultures - sometimes literally having conquered half the world - only to be made to give it back again when the natives realised what we were up to (meh, and we still have Gibraltar and the Falklands hidden in a safe spot, lol).

Now a lot of those previously annexed lands come and settle here - which is kinda karmic - cos we stripped their countries back in the day...

My opinion? RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT!

The only reason why, is that they are making it very clear: no other law will trump Australian law. That point needs to be driven home.

I forget where I read it, but I did read that some muslim communities in the UK already have de facto Sharia law in place. They've segregated themselves to such an extent they're able to impose their own laws within their community. Of course, this isn't the Sharia of the Prophet from the year 700, instead it's the radicalized, perverted form that justifies honor killings (for example).

Australia is right to say Sharia will not be above Australian law. They could've been less harsh and explained it better, but they're in the right.

The target audience doesn't understand 'less harsh'.
