Sinking dollar making Canadian 'pot' more expensive

Most people know that the sinking value of the U.S. dollar is making some imported goods more expensive. What people might not know is that this phenomenon apparently extends to "premium marijuana" from Canada.

That's what The Missoulian in Montana reported earlier this week. The Montana/Canada border is a common smuggling point, the paper reports, with U.S. dollars heading north and Canadian marijuana heading south. But with the dollar now close to a par with its Canadian counterpart, there's an exchange problem.

"It's very simple," Stephen Easton, professor of economics at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, tells the paper. "Canadian marijuana production costs are met in Canadian dollars, and those are worth more now."

But as a result, it's harder to sell the crop, he notes. "With exports no longer viable, the British Columbia marijuana industry has certainly taken a hit, so to speak," he says.

In 2000, the university published a study estimating the value of Canada's marijuana crop at $5 billion, with about 90% of it going to the U.S., the paper reports.

Mexico's peso is hurting as well, meaning the Mexican crop doesn't suffer from Canada's exchange problem. Canadian connoisseurs aren't impressed with their southern competitor.

"They're all about quantity down there," Alan Middlemiss, owner of the the Holy Smoke Culture Shop and Psyche-Deli in Nelson, British Columbia, tells the paper. "We're about the quality."

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
