Another 'communication' question

My youngest daughter will be turning 13 in a few months and she'll be getting a cell phone for her birthday. Everyone in the family will then have one, so I'd love to get rid of my land line. It's $50/mo that could definitely be used elsewhere.

The only reason, as far as I can see, to keep the land line would be so David can phone his friends and family in the UK and Germany. We use ekit as our 'calling card' and need the land line to do that. Using Verizon/cell phone to call internationally is too expensive. I thought about using SkypeOut or some such thing but there's still an expense there.

Anyone else ditch their land line in favor of 100% cell phone usage? Is there anything I'm missing in my thought process?

Jen

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

We rent and our cable is through out Landlord. He pays for it to come into the 4 family flat and then "runs" the lines to our individual apartments.

We have to have the landline for our internet.

Otherwise, I would chuck it too.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

We kept our landline. After seeing how cell phones didn't work on Sept 11, I am not going to get rid of that.

Hmmm.. good point. But land lines can get bogged down to. No guarantee that phone service won't be impacted.

Our cable and phone are dffierent... cable goes to the computer for high speed internet and for TV... we have local phone service. You have modem access? Wow... no issues with speed?

I keep a landline too. But then my cell phone reception in the house is #######. Even if I did get better service, I'd still keep a landline. Kinda like a security blanket!

dump the home phone and get a calling plan that allows you to use the cells. the one i have works with cell or a landline, it calls a 1-800 number stateside so there's no charge for calling straight to the uk/europe.

My landline worked like a champ on Sept 11. That's my test :P

My cell phone worked in NYC the entire time during/after 9/11. As did my friend's.

We do not have a landline. We use calling cards for the Uk as well, but call the local #.

We kept our land line. Every time a storm knocks out the power around here cell phone service seems to also suffer as well. Plus without power the land line should keep working long after the cell phone is dead.

I guess that depends where the towers are and how much load is on the towers.

I'm sure. Service in Manhattan, for example, is far superior to what we get out here in Jersey.

Another good point. Once the batteries die, there's no more communication without power.

I was in Washington, DC near the Pentagon on 9/11... my cell phone was fine but I had a had time getting through to anyone. Service on the lines we max'd out, I guess.

That can happen on any line, cell or land line. The telephone system can only handle so many calls at once.
