I agree completely. That said, there are people in this country who will take pleasure - approaching orgasmic - at reporting a strange looking family to the authorities and having them deported. They are the dangerous ones and they do exist.

A few years ago I used to volunteer at a place where we tutored illegal immigrants (and other immigrants, like refugees) in English, and one particular guy and I worked a lot on job skills so he could get a better job than the one he had. It is not necessarily fear mongering Dev. I have no idea how far this went in the "system" and I cannot vouch if this person took pleasure in doing so, my husband was reported to the Feds for doing his job. I can only thank the flying spaghetti monster that the FBI report and investigation showed the report to be unfounded. My husband was faceless to this person - all this tech knew was there was an engineer with an arab name in the substation.

But look where we are now - on hold, on the no fly list. So I say this is certainly not fear-mongering - it happens, even to my family. And for clarity - we are talking about reporting faceless, unknown people to some very damaging organizations just on a hunch. VJ Troll is basically outlining overzealousness and it is dangerous, as he says.

No, but if you had say $2,000 in parking tickets, and you got mugged.....you may be looking to have some of those parking tickets 'forgiven' before you testified against the person who mugged you. Isnt that part of human nature.....to look at any situation and see what personal benefit or gain there is in choosing one or the other path?

Similar situations have happened in the last 6 years in my area. I only know this because many of my students are first generation Americans and their parents have had to deal with this. They are all either Filipino or Arabic/Middle Eastern. In fact, last June a friend (and a parent of one of my students) was reported as a "suspected illegal" when in fact, the man is a naturalized USC. I don't know how many reports were made but I do know that he was held up at the border to Vancouver because of a "tip." Now, I realize that my stories are second-hand, unlike LaL's but they do happen and moreso since 9/11.
