Next time someone is offering a shift, ask if you were their first choice or the first person the shift was offered to. If not, then decline the offer (depending on your comfort level with each opportunity). It's unfortunate that you have to second guess those who claim to need help while trying to increase pocket book. Honor and respect is hard to come by these days...
