Well we made cauliflower korma, the dal mentioned earlier (too sleepy to remember and too tired to go back and look :P ), a recipe called "dry potatoes with peas" from the online source (but I recognized it as one of my faves).

I was going to try chapatis but my issues with flour in the US made me shy away.

It all turned out well. Had to adjust a couple of spices for CAPS' liking but overall it went very well.

And making those few dishes created enough food for probably another 2 meals.

Thanks for all the help/links/translations. :)

I made a curry last night with a kashimir curry powder I found in Cost Plus World Market. It was de-lish! If anyone is interested, Albertsons have started carrying lots of indian foods such as the Pataks jars, chutneys and spices, in their "shop the world" section..... makes me happy! :D

I like this web site for recipes -- they are described step by step and with pictures: http://www.route79.com/food/

I buy spices at Whole Foods or in ethnic groceries.

Can someone who knows explain how you get the red tints -- what spices do you use? I use garam masala, yellow curry powder, and ground cumin, and the resulting byriani is more brownish/yellowish. I buy byriani sometimes at an indian place, and it's more reddish.

Best way to make biryani is to use the Shan mix and in order to get the red/orange tint, you have to use a little bit of food dye. Most indian grocery stores will have it. I also suggest you put a tiny bit of biryani essence in with the food dye, makes it smell heavenly.

An answer to the orginial post....for some protein (and if you want it to be vegetarian) is to go the local Indian store and buy something called Nutrela (may be British, I am not sure, I have only gotten from India or Indian store). They are soy bean "pakoras". Trust me, I am NOT a soybean fan, but I love these. I add them to my rice (basmati rice, some onions and peas...fabulous main dish along with your dal makhani)....

Oh yeah...and for your chapatis (or your "roti"), try Indian store again and buy brand called Golden Temple. Made in Canada. :-)

Ah, the food coloring. That would do it. Thanks for the clarification. I was just wondering why my results were different. I may look for the biryani essence, if I ran across a south east asian grocery. There should be some around San Jose.

Anyone has a favorite, easy to make dessert recipe?

I've never made any Indian desserts (I find that after I eat all the food I make that I'm too full for more than chai).

I have, however, bookmarked this site in case I ever do.

http://www.indianfoodsco.com/Recipes/desse...es/desserts.htm

The kheer looks good to me, and fairly easy. But then I love rice pudding. ;)

I thought they mostly ate buffalo. LOL

Well, the west coasters ate dried fish and pemmican. :P
