Need new Canadian Passport

My Canadian passport will expire early next year, so I am preparing the application form to get a new one.

I read on the passport website that almost 46% of passport pictures that are sent in from other countries outside Canada are rejected due to the fact that they don't meet the specifications required.

Has anyone here applied for a Canadian passport from the U.S.? If so, where did you get your passport pictures taken in the U.S.? And did they meet the required specifications?

I was wondering about the exact same thing since my Canadian passport will expire in less than 2 years now. I can't imagine that U.S. pictures would be that far off/different from Canadian requirements though, but I guess we'll find out about that soon enough hopefully!

Going through this visa process, I had to get passport pictures, and I know there are differences between the US and Canada. The pictures I had to send in for my visa application were the US sized ones. I printed off the requirements from the computer, and brought them into a photography shop across from my work, and they read the instructions, and then made the pictures up. They adjusted them accordingly. I don't know why any photo shop wouldn't do this here. Bring in the Cdn. gov't. requirements, and have them make up the photo's to match them. Perhaps, and this is only my personal opinion...some place like Target or Walmart, which SEEM to have young, inexperienced photo department staff (sorry if anyone here works for them!), you might have some confusion...like, passport pictures are passport pictures to them. Check out a locally owned camera shop, and I'm sure they'll accomodate.

This used to be an issue now they're the same as you get for the US ones. I got my set for my Canadian and US passport done at Walgreens (Drug store if you don't have them where you live). Years back though people had to scope out specialty places like Sears or specific passport photo places that had the measurements for foreign passports. That I remember was expensive and a pain in the ### for me...

The passport photos also need to have the photographer's name, address and the date they were taken on the back of them.

All through the immigration process, none of my pictures taken in the U.S. ever had this information on the back.

Can you request that they do it or can you just write in on the back yourself?

I just got the guy who took them to write down the informatioin on the back...

The biggest concern with photos from the US is that Canada is a lot stricter about things like the amount of reflection allowed off of the face or glasses, the exact exposure (US is more lenient about over or under exposures), any shadows or 'off' coloration in the background, or smiling. The size of the face within the photo also has to be exact - the US is also a bit more lenient in this area - so US photographers are used to having some leeway on the quality of the passport photos they produce. On another list of Canadians in the US that I belong to, the women submitted two separate sets of photographs each with a guarantor signed image in case one set didn't work, the other one might. She got her passport back without having a rejection for photographs. I am going to give that one a try myself. I am getting the photographs taken this week so I can send them off to Canada for my guarantor to sign and get back to me and hopefully get the application itself sent off early December.
