Previous Marriage Certificate?

Hello everybody!

Great site! Very helpful!

I have a question about the documents which fiancée is required to bring to the interview at the embassy. I know a copy of the Divorce Certificate for the previous marriage is needed. But what about a Marriage Certificate from the previous marriage??? I ran across this info on one site in a process descriptions section.

Did embassy request a copy of the Marriage Certificate for the previous marriage from anyone? Or is a Divorce Certificate enough?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Only the divorce certificate is needed if you're filing for a K1.

If you check the embassy information for Vancouver, there are links to a scanned Packet 3 which lists the documents needed for the embassy. Keep in mind that it's for a K3 visa, but the majority of the items listed are required for both visas.

I brought my previous Marriage Certificate along with my Divorce Certificate to Vancouver. I went and paid to get a full size Marriage Certificate from the Registry office because I only had the wallet size one.

I also brought my husbands previous marriage and divorce certificates.

I was interviewed in Vancouver as I lived in the West. It was requested that I bring my previous marriage certificate AND my divorce certificate. I know that Montreal doesn't request the previous marriage certificate. This is about the only difference between the two Consulates for K-1 visas.

Thanks for your answers! I guess it's better to be safe than sorry and get a copy of the marraige certificate... Although I have no clue why they would need it if I have a divorce certificate...

I sent only my divorce decree along with Andre.

If you ask me, it's kind of stupid to require the marriage certificate. Of course there was one of those if there is a divorce decree. It's redundant.

I know, that's what I am thinking too! But logic does not always apply, so... Sometimes it's better to just give them what they want and everyone will be happy :) I will email the embassy though to double-check...

They will ask for it to show the trail of name changes. Im sure that you are using a different name than what appears on your birth certificate. They want to know how you acquired that name if thru marriage, court order name change, etc.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

The marriage certificate gives supporting evidence for name changes at marriage. Assuming the beneficiary is "Kate" a woman, the marriage certificate will help track that the name on the birth certificate and visa application, if different, represent the same person. It also confirms the "other names used" as asked on the visa application.

I can't think of a reason why a male beneficiary would need a marriage certificate.

Those are all good points. My divorce decree had all that identifying information mentioned above in it, as well.

Oh I see now! Name change - makes sense! It didn’t cross my mind because I (the beneficiary) never change my name when I got married, so my name still remains the same since birth. I guess in this case I won’t need to obtain and bring my marriage certificate?

I don't know what Consulate you're going to. On my Package 3 from the Consulate, it did say that I was to bring previous marriage certifcates. You can decide what you want to bring, and it's importance, and yes, it may be redundat, but if the Consulate is asking for this, why wouldn't you bring it? I wasn't prepared to have my approval delayed because I didn't think it was important to bring.

On the other hand, you could get it, at a cost to you, bring it, and they don't look at it, or ask for it. Then you might be annoyed that you paid for the certificate, and didn't need it, or others might think not to bother. Again, if it's written on the Package 3 instructions, of what to bring, I'd bring it.

As previously discussed, there are valid reasons for needing the marriage certificate, such as to document name changes for female applicants.
