Travel to US Virgin Islands?

Hi there.

My husband and I would like to make a trip to the US Virgin Islands in January. We decided on St. Croix because we cannot do international travel at the moment (we don't want to file for AP unless absolutely necessary).

I thought this would be okay since it's US-owned; however, now I'm not so sure. We would fly through Miami or Puerto Rico...both US-owned, but...hmm.

Will we be able to make this trip, or does he need AP to go there? I don't want to risk it if it's a "maybe" deal...we'll just go somewhere in the US instead.

As usual, you will get different answers depending who you ask. I would do a little more research before heading to the Virgin Islands. They are NOT a State of the US and therefore you may have to go through some kind of immigration. Even in Puerto Rico, once you pass security, Immigration folks (security desk) do stop people once in a while and ask them to show passport. It has been a while since I have been to Puerto Rico so things may have changed there. I know that when I brought my wife in on a K1 visa, the folks at POE told me I could go to Hawaii or Alaska, they never mentioned US Virgin Islands!!

A person currently may travel to and from the United States to the US Virgin Islands without a passport or other document, but would be required to have documentation in order to re-enter the US Virgin Islands from the British Virgin Islands or another country.

I guess I'm just extremely paranoid and I want to make sure everything goes smoothly. I'll have my husband bring his passport (with I-94) and a photo state ID. We will not travel to any other island and will most likely fly through Miami to make it as easy as possible.

If anyone has gone to the USVI while adjusting status without an AP, please let me know how it went. I haven't read any horror stories yet, but I'm sure someone has experienced trouble.
