Medical Check & Police Clearance Before hand

Hi all,

I’m new to this forum, and have been gaining very helpful information from you all over the past few days reading through your postings – thank you! My husband’s in Buffalo and I’m in Toronto. We recently sent in our AOS fee and are waiting for the AOS & DS-230 forms to come in.

I was wondering if its possible to get my medical exam and police clearance done (while we wait) before the official package comes in from NVC telling us to send them in.

Would I need to take specific forms from NVC to the RCMP and the doctor with me (i.e. official forms requiring RCMP, DR’s signatures) or can I just walk in and get all of that done and over with before the papers come?

If I have to take forms with me, where can I go to download them?

Any insight and advice would be groovy!!!

Thanks in advance

hmm, not sure on the AOS procedure, but I do know that the police check is good for one year, so you could get that now.

the medical is also good for one year, but the doctor will want to see your case number first, which you most likely don't have yet, so you will need to wait.

I have actually received a case number, its that MTLxxx.. number right? By the AOS I mean, we’re waiting for our I-864 to come in. Does this change things?

Thanks

I'm still confused (I'm blonde)

Are you in the US adjusting status or are you in Canada waiting for your CR1 or K3 visa?

I hope this helps... sorry

Hi Buffalobound,

I was a bit confused when I saw your posting in the other forum too.

AOS stands for Adjustment of Status generally and your display says you are applying for AOS.

I understand that you are now waiting for the affidavit of support or I-864 from NVC. You are applying for either an IR1 (married over 2 years) or CR1 (married under 2 years) probably?

It is also helpful to fill in your timeline - to do this and to change the visa type on your display, click on My Assistant at the top of the screen and then click on Edit/Add my timeline.

That aside, you should be able to book the medical with your MTL case number. I don't know where you live but in some cases the medical office in Toronto has been asking people to wait for their interview letter before they will book it.

You should go ahead and get your police clearance now, you have to send it in with all your original civil documents to NVC with the DS-230.

The $70.00 must be your Biometrics fee- that is the only thing I know of that costs $70.

The I 864 (Affidavit of Support) can be found and downloaded from the USCIS website.

www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=b70f8875d714d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCRD&vgnextchannel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD

That link didn't work. I'll try again.

Oh- after reading Trailmix's response, I didn't realize the NVC sent you the I 864 forms.

I was a K3 and things worked a little differently. I will bow out and let the CRI/IRI peeps help you. :)

Good Luck and Welcome to VJ!!

Hi trailmix,

Thanks for dispelling the confusion here.. sorry about all that, I've still got to learn the VJ jargon i guess! I though AOS was Affidavit of Support. Im applying for a CR1.

I'll go ahead and get the police clearance () and see if i can book a medical.

For the police clearance, in most cases the cert alone should be fine right, or is it also recommended to get the fingerprinting done too?

Thanks

Hey no problem. If you said 'AOS' and your info said CR1 - people would assume you mean Affidavit of Support :)

Anyhoo - if you have no criminal record then the name check is fine. You can get this at your local RCMP office or the local police station too. It's a country wide check.

The current wait time to get an interview in Montreal is between 4-6 months - your medical is good for 1 year - so you can kind of time it that way.

You might want to have a look at our current timeline to interview thread here: MTL IR1/CR1 timeline to interview - that will give you a better idea.

Last month they booked a whole bunch of interviews, as you can see on the list - which is very encouraging!!

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you have
