Importing food into the United States from Canada

Visitors are required to declare all food products and plants upon entry.

The United States maintains strict control over the importation of fresh and processed food products, particularly when it comes to meat, fruit and vegetables.

Meat and meat bi-products are generally prohibited from non-commercial importation.

Fruit and vegetables are carefully monitored to prohibit the introduction of agricultural pests and diseases. The U.S. maintains that the unmonitored importation of fruits and vegetables from other countries increases the risk of infestation by invasive species. Like Canada, the U.S. also restricts or limits imports based on its commercial industries, which include apple, peach, and other fruit in states like Washington and Oregon.

From time to time, agricultural alerts may also affect the importation of certain fruits or vegetables. It is best to declare ALL of your belongings at the border. The border official may ask you to describe the origin of certain items and will then decide whether they can be imported or whether they present a risk.

The U.S. imposes stiff fines for any prohibited fruits or vegetables that are imported without authorization. U.S. border officials do not take kindly to discovering that one “forgotten†piece of fruit in the middle of the suitcase, so travelers are encouraged to be sure to declare all food products before entering the country.

Some plants can be imported from Canada; however, others may require a special import permit. for more specific information, contact the United States Department of Agriculture (APHIS) website.

The above information is presented to assist you in your travels. For additional information, please visit either of the following web sites:

Canada Border Serves Agency (CBSA)

U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP)

http://www.gonorthwest.com/Visitor/plannin...der/food_us.htm

Food & Plant Items into US: Prohibited - Most pet food (US made in original package OK), citrus fruit,

tropical fruit, out of season produce, garlic, potatoes from Van. Island, corn-on-cob not from BC; All beef,

lamb, goat, bison, uncooked poultry, raw eggs; produce & meats from countries other than US & Canada;

Hawaiian origin plants & produce; Canadian plants & seeds without Phytosanitary certificates.

Allowed - Most commercially grown fruits & vegetables from the US and Canada with proof of origin; Pork

Coffee Crisps

There are Timmy's in the US ... and I've seen Coffee Crisps in the stores here. Just started noticing them.

But on to subject, I have driven across with fruit, sandwiches, etc. I even flew with some special type of Italian salami. Each time I did tell them and they let me thru. I don't think its always super strict.

For that matter I've always say what I'm bringing over (small gifts and stuff) and have never had to pay duties into Canada.

I just called them and the guys said no citrus and no beef.

This is what they ask us each time we've crossed - although the very last time we crossed they did ask if we had any veggies on board.

I've taken all kinds of fish back from Canada in a cooler, as well as tonnes of groceries, such as canned goods, boxed crackers, Kraft Dinner and ketchup, cheeze whiz etc.

Never had a problem.

They have Cadbury chocolate here, no worries.

The Cadbury's chocolate in the US is made by Hershey's under contract and is actually a Hershey's recipe with a Cadbury's label and is nowhere near as yummy.

johandmary: Tim Horton's are only in a few Eastern states.

Coffee Crisp are now in the US, imported from Canada. You may have to search to find them though, not all stores will carry them.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

At home I could list off what is and isn't allowed based on the NEXUS information I received. There's some restrictions on blueberries and some other things, too, but that might be going to Canada. Basically, no beef or citrus. Any prepackaged foodstuffs I'd doubt you'd have a problem with, unless they contain beef. Other fruits or vegetables you better declare, but as long as they are grown in the US or Canada you should be alright.
