Why is she laughing so much? Ooooh she works for the government. Enough said.

Yeah, that's true, she is laughing in the taxpayers' face for paying her big salary to do nothing all day long, it's unbelievable. There are two types of people there, the ones who do nothing, and the other ones who do their own job plus the job of the other ones....

Thanks to everyone for your advices and replies, visajoruney continues to be such an amazing place for support even after green card arrived. I am not just going to quit, but today I saw a great opportunity which matches my experience, so I think it's wise to look while working. I live in Orange County, CA, there are lots of jobs here especially in accounting field.

Laura, I wish you all good luck, I am sure you will do fine and find something soon. As you said, smart people will find ways to take care of themselves, just try to stay positive.

Thanks

To be honest your job doesn't sound that bad and you can always quit and end up at a place much worst. If your boss is aware how distracting your co-worker is I am sure they will be a bit more understanding if you are not able to make a deadline. Maybe you can have your desk moved. If you keep complaining you would be surprised how accomodating they can be. It is cheaper to keep an employee.

I love my job but my boss is irritating, she is paranoid, jealous and not an effective director but I refuse to let this lady run me out this job. Why should I disrupt my life because someone is unhappy with theirs.

I would try and stick it out and also put your resume out there and see what else is out there. That doesn't hurt. In the end you have to do what is best for you.

You have a good work ethic so stick to it. I see people flaking off all the time at my work (county government), I guess they don't think that working is a part of their job description.

Same in our office. There are people who don't do much to get paid. The good new is that since yesterday the woman with annoying laugh has been quiet. She got talked to by her boss and finally shut up. I had so much more done than usually, but I don't think that this will last. I am sure she will go back to her old ways soon.

Good for you...and if she starts up again, confront her on it in a no-nonsense way but non-combative.

Bullsh!t. Find a better job, then quit. <make sure it pays more>

It doesn't matter how long you were there, no one will ever care. Trust me.

That's exactly what I'll do, I am not going to quit before I have a better job. And, on the positive note the annoying woman was quiet for several days, they must have said something to her, but I am not sure how long it will last.

what about those noise cancelling headphones?

Well, I thought about that, but they cost over $300, and they are big,it would look like I am not working and just listening to music.

I found my Sony headphones at Best Buy for about $20...and trust me, with the volume at a moderate level, they are effective in blocking out any nearby sound. Just be sure to get the style that completely covers your ears.

I had a bad experience last year, but I decided not to resign because I would be "breaking" a year contract. Since it was only a year, I didn't want to finish it like that and have that on my resume. But if talking to the lady doesn't work and HHRR doesn't help you, run away from there! A job is stressing enough to put up with that kind of annoyance

And...

I have a bachelor's in law that's worth nothing here, he's got a bachelor in Biology with a minor in Microbiology but all pharmaceuticals, labs, etc here in PR are closing down. Horrible, really. We feel frustrated being two recent grads trying to start life and having the economy and bad job market against us.

I'm sorry you guys are going through that. I don't know how useful this can be, but I'll tell you anyway. One of my cousins and her husband are doctors, graduated in Venezuela. They both work on research; she's on the tropical medicine field, and he's on nuclear medicine. They found WONDERFUL research jobs in two different labs/organizations (I'm not sure) in Rio. They lived there for 8 years with their 2 kids and they were so happy. They had to move back to Venezuela to pay back a student loan... but they're arranging things to get back to Rio as soon as they can.

I hope that everything works out for you if you decide to move to Brazil. I wish I could move back to Venezuela, but honestly, we would starve ourselves there right now. Not a good place for teachers (Josh) or linguists (me), whatsoever :(

This sounds a bit like a recurring problem I have at work. It's not laughter but rather personal phone calls. The girl works 6 hours a day and has several hours in the afternoon to take care of personal stuff but won't do it. It's either fighting for hours (no joke) with her husband or just gabbing away with friends. Our supervisor took Friday off and she decided that would be an optimal time to interview child care provides. I audited her work and she did about 15 minutes worth of work in 6 hours and out of 19 claims had 15 mistakes. It's so frustrating and I have brought this up with my supervisor several times. I emailed our supervisor again but doubt anything will happen. She'll talk to the girl and things will improve for a day or two but it'll go straight back into phone time.

I wouldn't be so upset about this if she was able to work and talk on the phone but she really can't. I'm the one who has to clean up her mess. This is why I am looking for a new job after 5 years with this company. I just cannot take it anymore and no one is willin to take care of the problem. So my company is losing out on a loyal hardworking employee because they won't take proper steps to remove someone who doesn't really care about her job. :(
