Some banks will need to have a SSN before they will add you. You will need to file either EAD on its own filing under A-9 or file the AOS along with EAD filing C-9 before you can get one.

The guides on here at the top of the page will help.

We just went to the SS office today and they told us that if your visa doesn't expire for at least another month, then they will issue a SSN which will take about 2 weeks to get to you. If you have less than one month, or your visa has expired and you are waiting for the green card, you will have to wait until you get the EAD (which usually will come before the green card if you applied for it at the same time) and then you can take that to the SS office and they'll give you a SSN.

It's 14 days from the date your status expires, not a month and that even applies if you apply before that date and it passes while waiting for status verification.
