I still want to know how this dowry thing works:

How does a dowry work? Do you have to pay it back if the marriage fails within a certain amount of time, or is it a one-shot deal?

I mean... maybe I could make a lot of money getting married to a bunch of guys.

Isn't that how prostitution is justified in some countries? They pay the woman to be their "wife" for the night? Getting hitched and then anulling it the next morning?

Sorry to keep bumping this. Someone posted the link in the Middle East forum and I just wasted a good hour or more that I should have been studying reading this #######. Of course I did get a good laugh. But my husband was very disappointed. He told me to quit being so hateful to Shon since it's not nice to pick at the mentally handicapped. I'm done reading it all now so I'll go back to reading my Industrial Organization textbook. But really, this thread was so much more exciting!

In my opinion any able-bodied woman who can work a decent job is just a lazy bum if she expects a man to support her.

I have to say while I agree with everything else, I take umbrage at this statement. My fiancee took care of me for years...we decided what was best for us, and that was that he take care of the household financially, while I took care of other things.

I'm pretty sure youdidn't mean it like that tho, so this pretty much a superflous post anyways. :)

Damn, wouldn't let me edit...

I'm going to say something that is probably going to be unpopular, but here goes:

I think we all agree that Shon is acting much like a troll. I don't agree with her at all. I think she's rude, crass, arrogant, insensitive, ignorant, etc...But I don't think it's appropriate to meet ignorance with more ignorance. Making fun of her picture is really a low blow, and I think we can lose sight of the fact that *she* is the one out of line when ppl stoop to those levels.

You can have problems with what she believes in, or how she comes across...but to stoop to her level just kinda loses the point. 'But she started it' doesn't work for kids, and it shouldn't work here either.

heyshon my question to you is why are you so concerned about her relationship with her husband? she just asked abou thow to send money .. for what reason is non of your business.... maybe you need to get a life

here goes when you send money to another country its a good idea to know what your moneys value is worth lets take Morocco. avrage person makes $4,300.00 per year.

thats 359.00 per month. so if you were to send 500.00 to your SO for example every month

he would have 859.00 in his pocket monthly. that is $10,308 per year.

that would make his life style compariable to that of the President of his own country.

the man is living BETTER than YOU. how you like those apples?

She already stated that she is sending it to help pay for immigration costs which are charged in USD. If he only makes $359 / month that wont go far in the immigration process. He does need to pay for his bills in his country and buy food, etc.

In general we use paypal when we transfer money back and forth.. they do not seem to charge very much at alll compared to what you have been charged, though we have started looking into direct bank transfers.

And sorry i am not typing well today hahahahahahahah

Egad @ this thread.

ATM card is the way to go  We set up a special account just for sending money to my husband's parents in the West Bank. We manage the account online, so it's easy to monitor the activity and transfer funds instantly if needed.

My friend got one of those Visa Gift cards. it was usless.

apprently she could not use it at the ATM, or Western Union.

she said it was stressed that because, it was not linked to any bank account. she could not withdraw the funds. however, some Visa Gift cards do allow you to get a refund. it normally takes 6 weeks to get the money back and $15.00 fee. this depends on the bank. but, my friends bank would not let her get a refund.

You're right, I didn't say exactly what I meant. I was also a housewife for years although with little children that is no easy task. I was meaning more the attitude of expecting to be taken care of - seeing marriage as almost a "career". Whatever two people agree to between them is their business, bragging to the whole world that you see marriage as a way to find someone to support you means that it has been put out there to be mocked. Since you didn't do that, I certainly didn't mean to offend you or anyone else who has agreed with their spouse for one of them to support the other. All of us end will up on both sides of that equation at some point in our life most likely.

Shon, I hope you're proud of yourself... by bringing religion into this you've effectively turned nearly everyone here against Islam!!!! You're correct that Islam does give the responsibility of taking care of the family to the man (as it should be, not going to get into my opinions on this here but if someone wants to start another thread about this I'll come by and check it out) BUT you're forgetting that when a woman decides to give of her own money to her family it's considered and rewarded as charity... and charity is one of the pillars of this religion!!!! And BTW, the marriage contract and dowry are in place to protect us women in marriages NOT to take advantage of our men!

Everyone else, please don't judge Islam based on the rantings of this person.

Iceyspots, it seems if there are not many places that accept Visa there then it might not be worth the effort to get him one. Have you looked into Western Union? I don't know how much it would cost coming from the states but when Yousuf sends me money from Libya he only has to pay like $2 for every $100 he sends. I haven't tried to send him anything so I don't know how it works from here. (And I haven't sent him anything because he makes more money than I do NOT because I find it offensive to send money to my man!!!) Or maybe just wiring it directly to his bank account? One person said something about paypal but I know paypal is not available in all countries so that might not work either. I'm sorry it's so hard for you to do this :( Do they have ATMs there? I know there were lots of ATMs in Egypt when I visited but that's a tourist location and I haven't traveled much anywhere else.

that was me *smirk*

i feel no inclination to pull any punches when she, without merit, equates someone's mexican fiance to being a drug sniffer and so on. her outspoken racism deserves all the scorn we can heap upon her. :bonk:
