Icey, I would say that's your best bet although I don't know how Algeria is-if it's anything like where Javier lives in Mexico, most places take cash only, but he would probably at least have access to an ATM.

I didn't see many ATMs there, I just wanted to start the post and see what people thought about pre-paid credit cards. It's a good option for those who have been away from eachother for months or even (gasp) a year or two... For some cards you can add money whenever you want. If western union or whatever service, charges you a big percent every time you send money, if you send it often, the pre-paid credit may be better because there's no service charge to re-up the card.

actually, those prepaid cards are great because they carry the mastercard/visa logo. some places do charge a nominal fee to reload, but it is well worth it for what you're looking to do. i've used one in the past for online purchases (to decrease the odds of having a CC# stolen).

as long as a company accepts mastercard/visa ... you're fine. they can also be used like a debit card with a pin that you choose. you can also use them for cash advances. what you cannot use them for is putting a deposit on something (like when you rent a vehicle, etc).

i say that for what it's worth ... you should get one and try it out.

glad to have made you laugh, btw! ;)

you know.. you guys.. she's attacked me on other posts as well.. that's why.. after my 3rd response to her.. I didn't even look to the thread anymore.. she ruined it.

Anyways, to the religion topic.. me and Yacine are not ####### follow-the-quran-and-the-hadith-down-to-the-T people. And if anyone claims they are perfect.. well.. they're just lying or in denial. There are plenty of muslims that I know that did not take a dowry. Do I slander them for not doing it ? No.. All the 3 major religions have aspects to them that people don't follow or people think are useless. Me and Yacine practice the larger moral picture : Respect of parents, praying 5 times a day, dressing conservatively (yes I wear hijab), engaging in community service (e.g. I have volunteered for meals on wheels, children's literacy programs, working at food donation banks, doing collection of items for care packages to send to troops overseas, adopt-a-highway), donating blood is a big one for me - I donate a unit of platelets and plasma every month (which is a painstaking 1 1/2 hour process) and every other month donating platelets plasma and red blood, giving zakat (like almsgiving, a certain percentage of your annual income goes to the poor), and many other aspects of our religion.

She boats being selfish, I doubt she has ever done any of the above.

We have no need for dowry considering that *I* could support myself if we were ever to get divorced. Don't need the money.. lol..

I don't need anyone criticizing the fact that I didn't have a dowry. I'm sure she hides a lot of things from SO's parents.. Does anyone think that coming from a traditional society, this man's family would accept the fact that she's been married that many times? If they know, and say they don't care, then they're not worried about your marriage, they're worried about their son's green card. Do you think her SO would be proud for the fact that she is spewing cuss words and hate towards people in a public forum? Honestly, anyone who has been through 4 marriages has no right to call someone out on their morals/religious beliefs.

And the most ironic thing is that she claimed that my SO is lazy, and that another person's mexican SO is lazy, yet she proudly boasts the fact that she is on the internet when she should be working... now if that isn't lazy I don't know what is..

Anyways thanks guys for your support, you guys rock

That whole post was soooo great.

My first reaction was: you do NOT need to justify anything about what/how you do your thing, and you don't need to answer her accusations to you.

But, you paint a beautiful picture. An alternate view of how things can be! Imagine if we all thought Shon was a paragon of a Muslim woman, or of an American woman, or of someone who marries a foreign man. I'd rather not get clumped in, know what I mean?

I'm sure there are as many different types of Muslims are there are any other ginormous group and that there is no One Way. Your post seems to confirm that.

Your thoughts were beautifully expressed.

Icey,

I send money to my man through Western Union. I hate the fees, so when I do send money, I make sure it's a decent amount. I also thought about the debit card, but when I asked him about it he really had no idea what I was talking about, plus both times I was in Egypt, I honestly don't remember even seeing anyone that accepted them. I have no problem send him money. He has sacrificed so much for me already and I know this time is only temporary. He swears he will pay me back every penny even though I tell him he does not need to.

In the 221g topic Shon "wished a 221g for Icey's Algerian fiance." When she said this it was as if she was talking about my fiance also, as he is from Algeria too. I was highly insulted. Now she tells Icey that her fiance is lazy because she chose to send him money to help him with expenses. Well, I sent my fiance money too. Is she calling him lazy also? Yet again not origanlly directed at me, but insulting to me also. Well I have tried to send Hachemi money before and he has refused. While I was in Algeria I had just about spent all my money and there is no way to get money from you personal account or even use credit cards. Hachemi used some of his money from his business while I was there. I told him I would send him some when I returned. They do not make much money there. And if I could, I would send him money everytime he needed it. And he would do the same for me. I visited with Yacine (Icey's fiance) and his family while I was in Algeria. I have seen how they live and yes Hachemi and Yacines family have it better than most that live there. There are very many poor people there. But lazy there are not!!! It is our choice to help our fiance's. We are not buying our men. We do it because we love them. Oh by the way, I am muslim too. Just remember shon the things you say dont affect just one person. There are many in the same boat. Your mouth is working faster than your brain.

Wow Icey.....I keep reading all these posts! Did you ever think a simple question would get so much attention? ;)

I was just telling Meriem that one day, when all 4 of us (me, meriem, hachemi and yacine) can meet for a visit, I'm going to say to Meriem "But honestly, all I really wanted to know was if anyone has used a pre-paid debit card." and we are going to crackkkkk up and the boys aren't going to know what we're talking about..
