Florida Dog Owners Fear Flying Menace

GULF BREEZE, Fla. (AP) - Move over coyotes. Some northwest Florida residents are worried because they believe hawks are swooping down from the sky and attacking their small dogs.

Gulf Breeze residents have seen their pets fall victim to coyotes before, and the city even sets traps to control their population.

Martha Powers said she began yelling after seeing a large bird flying down toward her dog. The bird turned away. And Caren Gardner believes that her 3-pound Pomeranian was taken by a hawk last year 'within minutes' after she let her out to play.

Local veterinarians don't believe pet owners should be too worried about birds flying off with their pets because the problem isn't all that common.

Doctor Lorrie Rhodus from the Animal Medical Center said she has seen the problem before. She said that three years ago a woman brought in a dog that had been attacked by a hawk. The owner said the small dog was probably too heavy for the bird to handle, and it dropped the canine. The dog was severly injured and had to undergo surgery, Rhodus said.

Hawks eat rodents. I can't stand black birds.

A friend of mine worked for a lady that had a small dog that was on it death bed. She would carry it outside so the circling hawks wouldn't get it.

sanita feeds tons of animals and birds..her hobby...since we live near a park ..we get allot of birds...and hawks after them....i jsut bought sanita a new winchester..1000 ffs pellet rifle for her anniversary....(i know i am too nice too)..yes, we fight them daily...

in illinois, you cannot have them mailed to you..i bought it at the Farm and seed store...they carry them at rural king .........etc...i had a choice between the winchester and a daisy..i went with the winchester..cause talking to some farmers..they swore by it accuracy and hawk killing ability...they have chickens and ducks etc..

Get a .22LR and if you live in town just buy CB Caps for it. The neighbors won't hear a thing. I used to shoot them in my basement all the time.
